The Supreme Court invalidated the Trump-era ban on bump stocks www.wfla.com/news/national/supreme-court-invalidates-trump-era-bump-stock-ban/In a 6-3 decision authored by conservative Justice Clarence Thomas, the court said the classification is an impermissible reading of the law, ruling in favor of the challenger. Michael Cargill, an Austin-based gun store owner, challenged the bump stock ban after surrendering two in 2019. He was backed by the National Rifle Association and other major gun advocacy groups. The case did not implement the Second Amendment but instead asked whether the Trump administration, through the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), stretched the statutory definition of machine guns too far to cover bump stocks.

Good. Agencies should never make laws. Chevron next. 40 years of federal abuse us enough

Good ruling. Glad they got it right.
Machine gun definition is based on action of trigger, if multiple shots for single action of trigger it is a machine gun.
Bump stocks and other things fire fast but they do not meet the definition.
Words and definitions in law matters. You need to address laws through congress not agency rules as a end around.
Same arguments on the biden rulemaking on braces, engaged in business, frame and receiver.
There was a good epa ruling that got overturned.

Never should have been banned. This was a misstep that had me squinting at Trump when it happened.

Cyclist.
Whether useless or not, that is NOT the issue. The issue is it was submitted to atf which gave their opinion and wrote a NON binding approval letter. It met the legal definitions, It got the atf letter, it went to market. Now just because a legal item is used for a illegal use does not mean it should be banned. If you ban something do it by legal means, namely legislation to amend laws. Do not do it by changing agency rules as a federal code of laws definition. Federal code defines machine gun as multiple projectiles expended by single action of trigger. Bump stocks and other things do not operate that way. Now whether useless or not, the wrong thing (agency rule- new definition of machine gun) was used to ban it, instead of the right way having congress re define the definition in federal code. This is a over reach of the executive branch creating law. (Or rule having same effect as law) This is the issue.
Joe has done the same thing, or diffrent issues, and for the same reasons had supremes overturn his attempts. It is NOT the right way to do things. Congress makes laws, executive enforces, judicial interprets.

I know why they didn't uphold the ban, just need a way for the ban to stick legally.

You don't ban an item because it can be used nefariously. We put laws in place to stop those activities.
A Law abiding citizen has never murdered anyone.
Re-read that last sentence.

It's basically made to kill more people. Target shooting...LOL, personal protection I suppose but even that is kinda extreme....its made for a reason, that is why the Vegas shooter had one on every gun. Sorry, just because is not a good reason to have this available to everyone who wants to maximize their killing sprees.
The following is interesting in that is audibly compares the bump stock used in the Vegas killings with the Orlando shooting and a full auto.
