Took my son out for the Youth Hunt this past weekend. It was silent where we were, and we were the only one's out. Which is good but also a little disappointing. Saw a few hen's on Saturday.

Helped with a mentored youth hunt last weekend in Wakulla County. Birds gobbled pretty good early but they were henned up making it difficult to get them to cooperate. The boy with me got one late Saturday when the rain let up. When I got to the bird, he was swimming off into the swamp, so needless to say I got wet trying to get him, but to see the excitement on that kids face was well worth it. It was his and his Dad's first time ever turkey hunting and they are hooked for life now. He was also using his grandfathers shotgun that was passed down to him making it even more special. They were planning to stop at the store on the way home and get some turkey calls to give it a try on their own.

Awesome wildman! I think it may be poetic justice that a wildman had to get wet retrieving a young person’s first turkey. I’m sure the retrieval will be a campfire topic in the future. Thanks for adding a couple more hunters to the sport!

Boys had their target at 80 yards ( with 2 hens), 3 or 4 jakes came from the other direction and started running in circles and acting the fool. He did a 180 and left the building. They went for breakfast about 9:30 and are sitting on some bigger birds down the road. I’m home mowing the fookin grass.😒 First bird only gobbled once @200+ yards, tried to come in over an hour later.

Hunted with a good friend this morning and called up three. We werent set up good as I almost spooked the first one moving on them. A sit down right now deal. Told my buddy to shoot when he had a clear shot and I’d hope one of the others would try to jump him but to my trotted off. His bird was light, black wings, 7.5” beard and 1.25” spurs. He shot it with his grandads 1892 Parker sxs. Good times I’ll try to post a pic.

Birds were quiet opening morning. Saw a Coyote running the fence line in the distance at fly down and figured that was likely why. About 8:15, right when they should be gobbling their brains out, this big girl came in and ate a load of #5s. A jake came through about 40 minutes later but I let him walk. Good morning in the woods though

Boys probably had close to 20 hours of "numb butt" before these 2 showed up late Sunday. 1 was a pretty old bird, 1 7/8 and 1 3/4 hooks. Attachments:

Did he capture any decent video on the mounted Tactacam? The back cover blows off mine when I shoot magnum loads. It's kind of funny

Cody took his “cousin” this morning ( my goddaughter). Nothing gobbled and the longbeard came in to 80 yards and locked up. This jake came running though… mistake. I’m proud of these kiddos and my girl is happy, that makes ME happy .

I scouted today in the wma I have a quota permit for April Saw 7 birds, 3 which were long beards. They all headed into a enormous private property pasture. Not one of birds gobbled on the roost. Two of the long beards were huge, they went into the pasture 30 mins or so after the first 5. The lead bird gobbled a little but not very loud.

Active birds this morning, but only a few gobbles. Heard one gobble on the roost, got setup and watched him and his 7 hens fly down about 100 yards away. The hens were very responsive to my calls but he paid no heed. They fed around at that 100-120 yard mark and he was just strutting away gobbled once on the ground. No decoys out, figured what the heck I’ll belly crawl up there. Crawled up to about 70 and got to some tall grass right when two of the hens started putting at me. The gobbler had already started feeding his way back into the hammock at this point. I am froze up with these hens staring and clicking at me. I purr once on the mouth call to snap them out of it and they just start walking right to me. Gobbler out of sight now, hens walk right up and are pecking around within 10ft of me. They eventually catch a glint off my barrel and lightly bump off and follow where the gobbler went. Fun hunt.
