It’s always the Captain’s fault, although today it truly was!
The goal today was to put Lenny and Tom on multiple inlet Snook, although that didn’t happen. My day started out spilling half my large cup of tea while going to the dock. Next, was there was no live bait boat, I wanted pilchards. The ocean was 4 – 6, so catching bait was out of the question. Tom picked up eight dozen shrimp and we were off before 8. I should have went West, instead I went East which was a mistake. The Jetty was too rough. The Snook were lined up on a wall in Sailfish Point, although would not eat. I then decided to go through the Sandbar to get to the docks by the House of Refuge, it was the end of the outgoing tide and we “almost” made it, but we didn’t. It was a soft grounding but we were pretty stuck, I was considering going in to push, although moving around rocking the boat and with the strong East wind, we drifted off and had to go all the way back around Sailfish Point, South to the ICW, North to the Marriott channel and then back south along the shoreline. That would have been fine if we found the Snook, although all we found was about 30 Snapper. The 25 cent bridge wasn’t much better although on the way back we tried some docks in Sewall’s Point, where I hooked a nice Snook that broke me off on a piling. The same dock produced a big Sheepshead for me. We gave Sailfish Point another shot where we saw the Snook, again they wouldn’t feed. We continued to catch tons of Snapper including some nice but undersize Mutton Snapper (18 inch minimum size limit). Lenny finally put a nice Tarpon Snook in the boat which was the only Snook landed. We ended in Hell’s Gate without a bite at 3:00. Very disappointing to fish 7 hours and only put 1 Snook in the boat. That’s not usually my style. Lenny and Tom gets a raincheck for another trip when Pilchards are available.
