i enjoy duck hunting but would never consider myself a experienced duck hunter, basically i can tell a mottled duck from a teal when there flying by me but a teal from a wood duck or any others i would just be guessing. heres my question ,,,, do teal live in south florida year round, i have been seeing small groups of 4 to 10 birds last couple weeks and a huge pile of them this week at a glades wma while helping look for a buck. do some migrate or what i have been seeing are resident birds or early migrators.

Hunted them often in OH and KY. Always a special early fall season. Always heard they migrated into South America. Never saw one after October. Bet you're seeing migrators. This is their traveling time. If you aren't allowed a wood duck mistake they can be real tough to quickly distinguish from a female woody. Good luck. Excellent eating.

A few migrators showing up meat. I have seen a couple pairs throughout the summer out there but I attribute that to healed up cripples or just a fluke.

This is the time they first start showing up... They migrate on photoperiod not weather...so it's the same approximate time every season.

Are you seeing any numbers around Sébastien, Joe?
The west coast offshore is starting to trickle down.

We have hunted together some, but the regular duck seasons have been so lousy that I don't bother with it much anymore. Killing deer has become so much easier than finding enough ducks to bother with that I have morphed into a pseudo deer hunter. I was supposed to be deer hunting today but I just got home from relocating a boat. I'll burn my permit and a ton of points just to hunt tomorrow morning with my son. On the bright side, I have enough flying fish from this trip from Tampa that I will have a big fish fry tonight. Nothing better than a flying fish sammich... except having a flying fish sammich while in a tree stand!

WD's usually fly higher and if they decoy they come in out of no where, fast. If you see them from a distance their heads are usually looking left to right, moving.
Teal are smaller but look big because of their long wings. They usually fly just above the water 5-10' or so. They will come in quick as well.
This is based on where I hunt.
Good luck.

Been seeing a lot of BBWD in retention ponds and such, all paired up - are they hatching broods?
For me, teal always seem to be a low flying mass of confusion, up, down, up down, "ooh - decoys!" up and into the decoys. Love that.
Just can't get into early teal season, preferring cooler weather.

Two small decoy spreads and several came in to them. Good luck tomorrow.

Boys however, took a 4 man limit of woodies this morning before work. I wish I still had that much energy.
