Because I get to shoot so many around my house, 22LR standard velocity round nose is my go-to caliber/bullet.
This is because: Cheapest, It doesn’t bother the neighbors, Doesn’t hurt my ears, Double-tap to the lungs = dead within 50 yards, Brain shot = zero tracking, Mid section shot = self disposal outside the neighborhood, Round nose = penetration & no meat damage.
If I have a grudge against them I will use 22wmr, but beyond that I think everything else is overkill. I think I’ve killed close to 40 in the last year with 22LR, and sure sometimes it doesn’t perform the task perfectly but I’m usually way more satisfied than not. I’m talking up to 240lb boars in the mix. I used to apply for the hog quotas, but at this point I’m over pursuing them for recreational purposes.
What is your go-to round?

Hogs are mostly bycatch to me, so whatever is in my hands... knives, trucks, 444 Marlin and anything else in between... I don't really target them except on occasional night hunts. Then it's AR-15.
If I was blessed with the kind of action you have available, I would likely use a 22 as well.

Whatever airgun is in my hands. Any of my PCPs except my .177 can brain shoot one, and several can make clean lung shots.

Total bycatch for us also so it's usually whatever we're carrying at the time. Last one I shot was with a .45 home defense load from a SW 4506. This during a private land turkey scout.

I used to hunt with dogs so it was a 2 blade Case Hunter or Trapper and piggin' string. After my dog hunting phase, I killed a few incidentally with a bow using ACC arrows with Thunderheads on the front. Today I have no interest in killing one unless was a nuisance. It's hard to think of what to shoot a hog without fondly thinking of Mr.Harbison and his love of the 45-70, may he RIP.

God bless Bob. I almost always think of him every time I kill one and I think that he was probably a good enough marksman that he could kill one with anything. I figure if I can get two .22s in then I’m up to .44” of hole and that’s getting pretty close to .457.

Mostly my 556. But whatever I’ve got at the time will work. We have so many hogs on the 2 places I hunt that we try to kill every one we see, the AR is perfect for the job. But my 270 deer rifle and my turkey gun also work…

Like you guys I use whatever I have with me at the time. Unless it’s my bow. I don’t want to shoot a hog with an expensive arrow. If they start hitting our yards, I keep the .22 LR ready for the same reasons as James.

I either hunt small game or HOGS! Mainly use a 270, but archery as well. And buckshot when I may run into a sounder with little ones.
Pigs are so much tastier than deer. That being said, a super bloody deer steak is very good.

Hit the last boar with a 308 just off the center and about about a 1/2 inch above his left eye socket. 250ish #s and dropped like a bag of potatoes without a sound. His hide was so think my Sawzall couldn't even break the skin to behead him. Ended up just dragging him to the bone yard to hunt coyotes off of. Fun night with friends

I love my 22 mag for hogs. Head shot, lung shot, middle of the body " have a nice day" shot, you name it. I'm way past the point of caring if they run off with 40 grains of lead as a bonus. My 10/22 wmr has killed more hogs than i can count, and it's easy to carry!

I have owned and shot game with both.

when i was in my late teens if i wasnt catching greenhead mallards on dough balls or shooting all the gators, doves, quail, cottontails, squirrels we could eat all this just west of 441 in margate florida,,,, every couple weeks we would load up my buddies bulldog and drive to lake placid and get a hog or 2. drive around cattle ranches spot a hog cut the bulldog loose he would catch the hog we would walk up and put a 22 bullet in its ear, so simple and we must have done it 50x. then one night we driving back home in the dark and we hear thomas the bulldog growling and barking from the bed of the pickup we turn around and the 300 lb boar we shot 3 hours earlier is standing up in the back of the pickup, popping his jaws freaking hair running down his back standing straight up, this thing was pissed, hit the brakes and pull over the dog and hog start going nutz fighting in the bed of the pickup, hog jumps out starts running thomas catches him couple hundred yards down the road and this time we put 3 in his ear. never laughed so hard in my life.

I’ve had regret every single time I’ve used an arrow on a hog. Works just fine of course, except the time I tried to head shoot one with a blunt from about 10 feet away. That time I didn’t break my arrow but I did just about break my ankle chasing that unicorn pig.

If you say so, that was almost three years ago and my ankle has not been right since. I feel it every day and I can no longer run in it comfortably.

Careful James that’s how swine flu starts. You’re not seeing any body parts “cork screwing” up on you, or feeling musky right?

Ha, I’m not sure how you are picturing that scenario, but my only involvement with the “unicorn” pig was getting my arrow out of his face which was easy when I quit trying to catch it and just put a broad head through his lungs.
I was at Lochloosa and first shot the pig while carrying my stand in for an evening sit, ended up killing a buck right at dark. The deer was great except dragging it out of the thick with a destroyed ankle.

My kid has been playing with a 9mm carbine. We had a couple hogs running around lately. Also put a new cell cam out to pattern them better. He thru on a headlamp the other night and slipped up on a big boar, in his underwear. Got two rounds center mass and was thankful it ran out. I asked him what happened and he said “he’s dead, and I don’t have to deal with that MF’er anymore “. Did you look for it? “NO, there is blood everywhere and I don’t have pants on” Fair enough 🙂

The cell camera has played an important role for me too, along with a well groomed trail to the area of the camera. By groomed I mean trimmed for shot opportunities along the way and cleaned down to bare dirt periodically with a leaf blower. Cam is at their entry/exit hole in the fence. Even if the wind is bad I can move down it silently and quickly and get set up for their exit.

If we are targeting hogs we are usually hunting with dogs, so generally a knife or 22mag to the dome.

Last night some pigs came in on camera at about 6:30 as I was about to have a bowl of ice cream. Grabbed the 22 and went over and spotted the sow in charge of the bunch and put a bullet in the mid section. She runs out about 75 yards and gets to hurting and stops. I followed in behind her and escorted her about another hundred yards away from the neighborhood where she laid down and died. Really poor condition, so not a thought about eating her. We’ll see if the others learned a lesson- probably not.
Even without trying to put them down quick, oftentimes they don’t go that far even with a measly 22. It will almost always be my choice around the house.
