I’ve seen a lot of mini season posts along with posts from this weekend on a school chat I belong to and so far all the reports have been outstanding with no issues of people catching their limits from Miami down to key west. From what I’ve seen so far it looks to be the best lobster season so far in many years

Got 15 in a short time and that was enough, less than 1/4 mile off Elliot Key. There were many more. Only went because my daughter wanted to take some friends. Spoke to a trapper out of Miami who got 500 lbs. Probably pulled 300 traps. Looks like a good start to the season.

It does seem like a healthy year for lobster in Key Largo. We limited on first day of mini season, dodging thunderstorms. Since the weather sucked then, opening day of regular season was no doubt the first day for lots of people. Mrs. Throttle and I hit a pre-scouted spot that we were pretty sure we'd get a few and there were tons of boats out so we were worried that our spot would be taken since we hit the water at 9:30 and already saw several boats heading in with limits. Lots of boats were working areas surprisingly close to shore, and everywhere else too. Our random patch was unoccupied but there boats anchored kind of near, and a few towing divers around the area. We got six off our first spot, losing a few good ones up in some deep holes and crevices in the heads, then tried a new spot, a deeper edge with nice ledges and got three more. We worked hard for a limit and a half, really earned it, but a really nice day on the water.

The wife and I are planning a trip down there next year September, hopefully we can book a site a John pennekamp. No boat but we’re planning to take the yaks. Any advice for catching some bugs off the yaks? From what I’ve been reading it seems all of pennekamp is off limits. I’ve never been bug hunting, not looking for your honey hole just advice on how to find em! Preferably without a hefty fine from fwc 🤣

The kayaks might be fun in the mangrove creeks at Pennekamp but will probably be of limited use for lobster there. The Keys state park campgrounds are all miserably difficult to get into but Pennekamp is my least favorite. It's the most landlocked, actually on a lagoon, not the ocean. If you're really adventurous and can figure out when slack tide is there are lobsters to be had on mangrove shoreline undercut banks, but the visibility sucks in those areas. I've taken a shit ton of lobsters from shore up and down the keys over the years, before I had a boat, mostly near the ends of bridges that have rip rap causeways, and again best on slack tide and the vis will suck. But with effort and scouting you'll get some. Good luck and have fun.

throttleThanks for the advice, sounds like a nice kayak trip through the mangroves regardless of finding any bugs. I fish mosquito lagoon here and the mangroves hold some good fishing days. Booking any camp site is practically impossible anymore, literally have to book 11 months in advance.

Check out the creeks to the south of Largo Sound right out of Pennekamp park marina and campground on google earth before you go. I see people trying to paddle the main channel which is full of power boats on weekends and there's a nice network of back channels that would be so much better for kayaking.
