Got an invite to fish with a buddy on Friday. Left out of Indian Pass for a 40 minute run, and were marking fish when we came off plane. we boxed four nice ones, and released 4-5 that were short, or only 16-17". that will come back to bite you every now and then but paid off this time. we lost 5 to flipper there, also. The triggers (you know, the one's that we only get a 28 day season, gotta be 15", and can only keep one each) were so thick that we literally couldn't get a bait to the bottom. we finally decided to leave and go to another spot that wasn't covered up with them. We can to another number 30 miles out, and finished our limit with another four fish that were all better than 24". Fooled around trying to find some mangos and vermilions, but came up empty there. we caught 4 red grouper, and 3 gags that we released. headed back to the pass, and was on the trailer by 12:30. I had to work Saturday, and today, and also tomorrow, so my ARS season is over until 10-05. It is beyond my comprehension that the people who are in charge of setting limits and seasons are so ignorant of our actual fish populations. between last Wednesday and Friday, we caught a minimum of 40 or more triggers. Most were over 15". On either day we could have caught 100 easily. The Gulf Council exists only to try to keep rec and for hire fishermen off the water. and they are slowly succeeding.
