Babies will be beautiful too, heads colorful enough to where they look copper in color.

Babies will be beautiful too, heads colorful enough to where they look copper in color. When I got her on my hook... and Tailed her.... Pretty sure I felt 7.... there could be more....
I did not properly palpate her..... I was alone in the middle of nowhere and I could feel the babies wiggling inside her.... Palpating a pit viper is a two person job and she was really close... I did not want a baby to pop out half way and nail my right hand.

And.....if I remember the science properly.....the little one's venom is more concentrated at birth than after they've used their system a while so even though it is a small dose it packs a disproportionally powerful punch. I refuse to pick up vipers but do always find myself standing and admiring the more magnificent specimens.

I refuse to pick up vipers but do always find myself standing and admiring the more magnificent specimens. Venom potency is about the same.... The difference is control.... Pit vipers, true vipers, elapids, etc. Can control how much venom they inject with a bite. They don't want to use it all, because it takes their bodies a while to replenish it.. Snakes are primitive animals and they would not consciously think about it. But they do conserve their venom. So it must be instinctual. But it takes time for snakes to learn that muscle control. So with a young snake you are most likely going to get a full load of whatever they have. Where as older snakes have control and seldom inject all of their venom... That is where the myth that the young snakes have stronger venom. They don't. you are just more likely to get a full dose.

Makes sense. And reinforces my desire to not be bitten.....even by a little one!

So JB here’s a question. Wouldn’t the moccasin be more apt to crawl away if you were near her tail as opposed to the side of her head? Just trying to fathom through making one vamoose safely off the road.

Just trying to fathom through making one vamoose safely off the road. Yes!!!! With that particular snake I could not approach her from behind without getting to close or getting in the marsh... easier and safer for me to just grab my snake hook and move her...
but if I can get behind the snake safely.... I will often walk them walk them into the woods... I do this with With Moccasins EDBs and Pygmys..... I always move them off the road in the direction they are traveling
