Popped a decent 8 last week of smoke pole. Sat this morning and saw crap. That's Deer hunting. Hows the Hogs over your way ? That Steinhatchee Springs is over ran with them...

This morning was my first sit of the entire season. I skipped archery and muzzleloader. I saw a couple of does at daylight. Few shots around, nothing close. Cams showed they moved heavily last night.

Had to use the brake to avoid a fork horn before daylight while going to my stand. Saw another buck jump a fence into private property as I drove by. Didn’t see a thing from my stand. Definitely hunting where I’m at. Actually killing a deer will require more time, skill and a spattering of luck. Hope everyone is enjoying the absolute, “best time of the year”.

Knocked down 5 this morning. Recovered 5 well before 10am. Big catfish fry with all the trimmings for lunch. Back in the stands for round 2 this evening. Been a good day so far.

Incredible day in the woods for me today. I'll give a more thorough post once I'm back home at my computer.

OMG - I hope those boys are helping you w the skinning and rendering chores. Looks like you have a great supply of venison already. Now about those big hogs…? I'm keeping the kids busy with the cleaning parts I don't want to do, for sure, but they slowed their roll when I told them they were going to be doing all of it last night. Not much this morning. Passing up some small does and young bucks. Everyone learns more when they're not desperate to whack the first deer they see... but you can only teach that when they get to see more than one deer a week. Not any hogs in this area of SC. I think my son and I will engage with that on my next week off back in FL. Some good bucks starting to move on our lease there.

Sat this morning and it was slow. My son saw a little 4 and a big 10 that he couldn’t get a shot on. I saw a little 4 and a couple does. My buddy who I put in one of the new stands saw nothing, but he might have been 😴…

I stepped out of the house at 4:21am Saturday morning. I hadn't even made it down the steps before a deer standing in the yard spots me and starts blowing. The deer took off into the palmettos, crashing the whole way through, and I headed in the opposite direction towards my rear fence line. I make it back to my climber in the back and start up the tree. I get maybe 10 ft up and another deer starts blowing off in the distance. Come 5am I'm 30 ft up the tree and settled in. At about 6:15 I start hearing slow cautious foot steps coming through the brush. Sticks are popping and palmettos are crunching as it comes through. The deer walks directly under my tree and stops. At this point I'm holding my breath and trying to spot the deer. It's still before daybreak and so dark I can't see the ground. Deer walks off, up the main trail a ways and then turn off into the palmettos. I knew it walked passed at least one camera so I figured If I didn't see him after sun up, I could at least check the camera card mid day. Sat until 10am and didn't see a single deer. Climbed down, headed for the house, and pulled the camera card on my way in. Reviewed the card and sure enough it's the 7pointer who has been on cameras lately. He's the best buck I've seen on my property in the last 3 months so I figured he was a realistic target. Now I know where he's coming from and likely bedding up. Took a break and did some fishing out on the gulf. Bites were scarce but a bad day fishing is still a pretty good day. On the way back I pulled over to eat a sandwich. I was checking out an area on the side of the road washed out from the hurricanes and just dumb luck I found a broken spear point. Got back in the climber around 4pm. About 5pm I hear a little movement on the other side of the area I believe the 7pointer is bedding in. He takes his time but come 5:20 he finally peeks his head out enough for me to confirm. He takes two more steps and turns perfect broadside. I hit him in the shoulder, which passed into his lungs at about 25 yards with a 130gr Federal Fusion in 6.5CR. He jumped kicked on impact and then plowed dirt for about 10 yards. Great first buck off the farm

I would buy the old boy a couple of dozen birds and put them out where he could have a great last season.
