I ended up buying an 8 footer. Seems a bit to big. It is on a adjustable base so I can lower it easily.
I originally had one of the short metal ones.
Yall think its worth the extra reception I might get?

I used to have a 17' Sea Hunt and I used a 5' fiberglass antenna on a sliding mount that I made up. I took a 3' grab bar and mounted it vertically on the side of the console. Onto that I added a rail mount antenna base snug but not tight so I could slide it up or down on the grab bar. With it in the lower position the 5' antenna was still up, and fit under my bimini top. If there was an emergency situation and I needed more range, I could slide the mount up and have the equivalent height of an 8' antenna.

Previous statement is I believe spot on. VHF barring unreliable skip transmits pretty much straight line. In emergencies higher is definitely better.

Great idea saltydog. Thanks for the input fellas.
Gonna give an extended try. My bimini broke, I think I'm gonna try one of those umbrellas and I think it will work with the antenna.

You can rig a 3 ft on the end of a fishing pole in an emergency.
Im considering getting a detachable antenna for a handheld 6 watt. Be good for 30 miles up on a fish pole.
