The new survey is out, some very interesting proposals want to hear some of your takes on them, particularly regarding the updates to the quota system. I am liking what they are proposing for non-resident turkey applications. Also want to hear your thoughts on the proposed labeling rule for trail cams and stands. Not sure I support. Go read over it, you should’ve gotten an email delivered to whatever address you’ve given them

Also they are potentially opening a new 17,000 acre WMA near Dinner in Henry county. All quota unfortunately but we’ll take what we can get

I could see the advantage of having your name on stands. It could prevent stands from being put up or left up during the closed seasons. It could used to cite people who leave stands in the woods, kind of like finding trash thrown out that has your name and address on a letter. Having your name on a camera may be the least of that problem as several states have already banned them on public land.

Several WMAs are floating the idea of prohibiting non-res turkey hunters for the first 3 days. Make sure to check each region

Several WMAs are floating the idea of prohibiting non-res turkey hunters for the first 3 days. Make sure to check each region This and the idea of allowing a max of 10% quota permits to go to non-residents are what I am most in favor of. Hey maybe I’ll finally get the chance to hunt that spot 20 minutes from my house I have to drive past to get to the romp-n-stomp and not see a bird. Just so some guy from Ohio can complete his “slam”. At least myFWC is putting on the show that that care about us residents now, credit where credit is due

The ten percent allotment for non- residents sucks if you are the non-resident. One the states that I hunt has gone to this system. I drew last year and will probably never draw again in my lifetime. I could imagine at some point some non-resident hunter bringing up a suit demanding that states using the 10 percent rule return a portion of their Pitman-Robertson funds.

Sure it sucks for non residents but the current pattern of us residents waiting 5 years to hunt the spots in our backyard sucks more. I think the 10% number is meant to copy western states that only allow this many tags for non-residents. I would assume that’s the legal minimum that’s been established due to pitman Robertson funding but I could be wrong.

The real problem is too many people and not enough land available and it's not getting any better with the number of people moving to FL. What you gain by limiting non-resident hunters will be lost to the fact that we are gaining more "residents" everyday. These new residents are over 65 and after 6 months they aren't buying any licenses. From what I understand, because they aren't buying licenses, they aren't accounted for in the distribution of the Pitman-Robertson funds. We are back to square one, too many people and not enough land and for that I have no answers.

outa state turkey hunters should get 0.0% of florida wma quotas, they can go to non quota wmas or private land. there just isnt enough places or birds to meet the demand so residents first. the new area by dinner island is gonna be small game for first year or 2 then maybe quota only deer hunts, thats what ive been told, also its a broken up piece of around 7 areas all surrounded by private land once the miami and south florida no speaka inglesh crowd get in there they will screw it up for everyone so even hog hunting will have to be quota only. name tags on stands and cameras is a good thing for fwc and the crybabies who want to tattle when your stand is up 3 days early so dont see the point of that rule. best thing fwc could do is limit the number of quotas someone can receive in the redraws to 1 archery 1 blackpowder 1 general gun at a time. if you get a archery permit in redraws you cant receive another one same goes for gen gun and blackpowder. this will cut down on the no shows and increase odds of everyone else applying. i have 3 general gun permits i received in redraws this year all to same person. dinner island last week which i used, picayune strand oct 16th i believe which i will use and couple days ago got everglades headwaters nov 29th. systems great when you get lucky but not fair to most hunters and is the main cause of no shows/wasted permits/loss of opportunity for others.

The 10% rule absolutely gives to others, outside FL, what we got from them.
And, I wish we would charge out of state hunters the same nosebleed money that they charge us to hunt their states. Specifically turkeys and these damn alligators. Additionally, I couldn't care less if Johnny's Osceola Outfitters charged $10k to hunt these elusive unicorns of the swamp.
I haven't read the proposal yet, but, I'm not sure I agree with my name, number, and location on my equipment either. Think about it some more before you check the yes box. It won't stop a thief, or some lazy bastards, but it might allow some asshole to find your ass when you don't want or need to be found.
Some of you guys really need to stop worrying about what others are doing. If you have a leftover tree stand problem get a crew together in February and go grab some free stands that we're already left illegally. Fwc would probably endorse your efforts and help.

i have turkey hunted in 7 states i believe, 8 maybe and everyone of those states has better turkey hunting on there public land areas then florida, except a few of our quota only wmas. its the grand slam crowd who gotta get a osceola that make things tough on resident hunters. if you can afford to chase after a bird because its a little smaller and different color then you can afford to pay a outfitter or sign up on a lease for turkey season only, or hunt non quota wmas AFTER the first nine days.

Another reason that our turkey season is appealing to non-residents is that our season opens 2 weeks to as much as a month ahead of their season.

Two new WMAs total near 10,000 acres! 10k sounds nice but if these new areas are quota hunts it means only 40 more permits for each deer hunt a year. This is a drop in the bucket. For the general recreationalist this is good news. With the current system of quota hunts deer and turkey hunters we will never have enough land with all the very limited hunts and quotas.

I have seen enough proposed rules made into rules because hunters have bitch-a-thon of excuses of why and how it's unfair to them, so let's change the rules. Bullshit, I alway select no when it has a negitave out come on other hunters, residents or non residents. The lottery for quotas should be fair across the board.

It's a hard pass on labeling any of my things with my customer number. If they want to deal with stands being left in the woods, they can hire more officers and/or pull them off the water to put them in the woods.

Right now our resident applications are heavily diluted to the point where it takes 3-5 years to reasonably expect to draw a quota hunt in the “Osceola zone”. That’s ridiculous for a FL resident just trying to get out and hunt in their backyard. Non-residents can go grind it out at the non quota area like the rest of us or fork out the 3k for a private land hunt. Or wait the 5 years to draw a hunt. But we should get first dibs on quota hunts just like every other state does for their residents. We buy licenses here every year, we pay taxes for the roads to get to the WMAs, we promote the conservation of our state. Not sure why your so worried about Joe blow from Ohio having to wait a little longer to get his slam.

I am an old man and have tried to live by the Golden Rule, "Do to others as you would have them do to you". I don't think your chances are going to greatly increase just because the non-residents are out of the lottery pool. One thing that I believe that would double your odds would be double the quota hunts. For example, instead of X WMA having 3,3day hunts that last all day. Go back to hunting until 1pm and doubling the number quota hunts. You would still have the same number of hunter/hours and same amount of hrs for gate attendants. You would end up with more enjoyable hunts or at least that has been my experience. I've turkey hunted for almost 50 yrs and I can count on one hand how many enjoyable hunts that I have had in the evening. Don't get me wrong, I've killed a few in the evening but only a couple were what I would call a classic hunt. This is an after thought, by going to hunting half days you may discourage some of these non-residents from applying.

Nope because those FL hunters live here, pay taxes here, buy licenses here, etc. Very different from someone living up north having never stepped foot in our state. I couldn’t care less about subspecies. I want to hunt where I live, not driving 2 hours to probably not lay eyes on a bird. Put it this way, if Joe blow from Ohio all the sudden had to apply for 5 years to hunt the public land in his county because thousands of Floridians wanted to kill an Ohio bird, would they want their DNR to allow them a greater chance at those permits? How do the big midwestern states manage for whitetails? That’s right, only a fraction of the tags can go to non-residents and it takes multiple years to draw a good unit. Nothing against out of state hunters, however our state should look out for its own residents first.

In 2023, there were approximately 150,042 eligible wild turkey hunters in Florida1. Out of these, an estimated 25,056 hunters participated in the Spring Turkey season.
With all the WMAs and only 25k hunters that participated why do we need quotas for turkey hunting?
