A Florida surgeon mistakenly removed a man’s liver instead of his spleen, causing him to die on the operating table, a lawyer for the man’s widow alleges.
Shaknovsky told Beverly Bryan her husband’s spleen was so diseased that it was four times bigger than normal and it had moved to the other side of his body, Zarzaur alleges. But in a typical human body the liver exists on the opposite side of the abdomen and it is much larger than a spleen, he said.
Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast hospital said in a statement Wednesday it's "performing a thorough investigation" into Bryan's death and takes allegations like the one made by his family "very seriously."

Sounds like a big time payout for the family from the insurance companies.
In light of the prior screwup by Dr. Shaknovsky, he ought to get jailtime and his license permanently suspended.

Public records are available on the FDOH website regarding a case from last year that Shaknovsky settled for $400,000. According to a report filed with the Florida Office of Insurance Regulation, Shaknovsky mistakenly removed a portion of a patient’s pancreas instead of performing surgery on a “mass on the left adrenal gland,” which caused an “alleged abscess and infection from the removal of the pancreas tail.”
Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky was operating on William Bryan at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital in August when he mistakenly removed William’s liver instead of his spleen which lead to the patient’s death.
That surgery was also performed at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital in Miramar Beach. The insurance document states the patient suffered “permanent, non-disabling injuries” from the surgery including “loss or damage to organs,” and “minor – loss of fingers.” No details are given as to why the patient’s fingers were injured, but the pancreas is responsible for regulating the body’s blood sugar.
