In addition to getting 4 gallons of used oil for free, oil which will be used instead of diesel in the drip torches when we get back to burning.....plus the oil change container......we scored 4 gallons of Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and 5 quarts of Marine 4 Stroke.......the oil we bought costing all of $20......and my 150 Merc is ready for a oil change! And......and.......among 5....yes 5!.....broken rods he had there were 2 Kistlers and a St. Croix.....( kistlerrods.com/ ) which simply needed tips to be serviceable. One of the Kistler having lost all of 2 inches!! Those were all free as it was late in the day and he was done. Plus......a roll of 16" X 18' bunk carpet.....the expensive stuff......which is something else I've been dragging my feet on....... Nothing like folks with lots of money......who're a little clumsy and when they are done with something they are just done with it!!

Sometimes it's easier to give it a way than to try to sell it for a few measley bucks or have to dispose of it yourself.

That's a carry-over from the fish monger business, all money made or used from the "scraps" is pure profit.

I've made some decent money buying and reselling items from garage sales. It's funny what some folks value more over other items at estate sales. Usually a relative that's passed away. I was trying to buy a newer cooler, reel, and diving regulator once. I offered the lady $20 for the three items. She said I don't know that cooler is new can you do $30? I knew the regulator was worth some money so I gave her the $30. I ended up selling the regulator for $125 and kept the cooler and reel.

It's a truth.....for most of us it comes down to adding in the little bits and pieces over a lifetime to where there is some sort of a pile. Hard to convince kids of that.....but it's the high percentage play.

We've not found it a way to make money.....but then we're always thinking about things we can get cheap that we are going to be buying anyway. Which.....I guess......is actually making money....the old penny saved is a penny earned adage..........though, in the real world a penny saved is a penny and a half earned, for one must make a penny and a half to have a penny to spend......

I have trouble getting my wife to stop and see what folks are selling. Especially if there are a bunch of fishing rods sticking up.
In my area folks seem to ask what the new value is and balk at being offered 50% of new for an old used rod & reel...

If there is a "secret"......and in life there are few real ones.....it is to go late in the day......but then, again, we are looking for stuff to use and it's almost always just us that's buying grease and oil and mineral spirits and asking about the big pile of towels that are still there that will be made into shop rags.....the other stuff we happen to end up with is just luck. It is fun though......got some really neat old things sitting on a shelf that cost almost nothing.....like a ancient brass spark proof fire shovel that came off a tug....cost $3......looks good sitting over there and if push comes to shove the brass is worth more than the $3......

Man garage/estate sales around here are a joke. Most of it is cheap Chinese shit they want premium prices for. And haven forbid they have firearms. Worse than pawn shops. And people buy it!?!?!?!
Although a few months ago my dad woke me up on a Saturday and asked me to bring my truck. I get over there and it's packed. Cars for blocks. People in and out. This man bought my two oldest daughters nice antique matching bedroom suites. I'm like dad I've been married 26 years and still living on a bed made of scraps. 😅
It was cool of him to do it. They weren't cheap but were good and sturdy. Better than than anything he ever bought me. Now I'm jealous. My daughters have better furniture than me.
He bought my oldest daughter a set for her wedding.

I used to make a point to stop in to garage sales while out doing sales calls on Friday's. I had one big neighborhood that I could always count on to get deals on good quality stuff. I hit one early in the day one time, and it had all kinds of really nice woodworking stuff and tools. Most of it priced ridiculously cheap. I had $ 150 bucks on me at the time. I chatted up the lady selling everything and asked her if she was moving. She said her husband hadn't come home in two weeks, and this was how she was getting even with him! I spent the $ 150 I had, loaded up and hauled azz to the bank. By the time I got back, it looked like a flock of seagulls swarming her yard. Everything else left was already spoken for.
Another time I bought a box of VHS tapes. Must have been 40 or so in this big box. Someone forgot to erase their homemade sex tape before they put it in the box!
