The work started today after a prompt supply delivery yesterday. The crew showed (latinos) up and immediately went to work. These guys worked HARD and uninterrupted. Couldn't speak a lick of English except for 1 who was difficult.
I gave them some ice twice to load their cooler for cold drinks. As I watched these guys in this blistering sun they never lost focus nor drive.
It's amazing when you come from nothing, have nothing, what it does to a person.

Mango, are you replacing the roof because you really needed a new one, or because insurance said so? We were basically forced last year to replace ours due to being 17-18 years old, but no issues. Basically like everyone else is my guess.

Good for you. Our development is mostly asphalt shingles, but a couple metal roofs have been going up, and I like them. I would have considered it, but the wife was totally against it.

After talking with the rep he said the metal roof would last 50 years, so, I think that will be more than enough on my time line.

I'll be happy with another 10. Don't want to get to old. I'm 69 and still in good shape.

Good call.
I did metal in 2006. Diy, screw ever 9 inches.
Insurance has it listed for a 70% replacement cost for a long time to come. Smartest thing i have done.
Meanwhile dingbat next door keeps patching his 1992 3 tab roof. He likes to make deals and got took for 1/2 the insurance money for new roof. Goes w his 12 car junkyard pretty well.

Most of those guys around here are Honduran or Guatemalan. I just had a big paver job. They were there at 7.30 am and left at 5.30. 30 minutes for lunch. They are booked solid. They are living the American dream, have houses, vehicles, I was talking to them, they were really happy guys.

I'd bet a shinny nickel they are motivated by piece work. People work different when they are paid for what they do, not how long it takes.

Well there you young whippersnapper, this here older experienced person person will tell you he knows they're paid by the hour. BTW, I've seen people being paid piece meal who work just hard enough to pay their bills. Go figure....

I'd bet a shinny nickel they are motivated by piece work. People work different when they are paid for what they do, not how long it takes. Due to their paperwork situations, they are usually a sub to the main contractor. The sub takes care of the worker bees. I will ask the owner, but I will bet they are paid by the square foot of pavers they put down, as that is how the primary contractor quotes.
