Shrimp delay started the day! I forgot to order shrimp and when I arrived at Snook Nook early in the morning, they were out of shrimp and the truck wasn’t coming until 11:30. Bob and I headed out at 12:30 and missed the best part of the outgoing tide. We fished in a ghost town for 4 hours, although we both fished hard, never stopping or giving up and it sure paid off. The outgoing tide was 1.5 feet lower than normal and there was a minimal slack tide and then the incoming tide started with a roar.
It was time to go big or go home and we went big!
Bob led off in the “fairway” (if you know, you know, but if you haven’t fished with me, you wouldn’t know) with a gorgeous 28” Snook (slot but out of season, not that either one of us would have taken it). It was a pretty good fight and Bob did an amazing job keeping him out of obstacles. We continued on, Bob was “on fire” and he put 2 more drag screaming Snook in the boat, they fought really different, digging in and staying deep, while ripping drag out. Bob hooked another drag screamer that he couldn’t get off the bottom and definitely played tug o war with him and finally got him up to the top where I put the net on him and it was a 17 lb. Black Drum. Just so you know, I was catching fish also….CATFISH! It was finally my turn and I tangled with a big Black Drum, not my biggest ever, but 19 lbs. and 28” long, see last picture. Now the tables turned and I was finally catching, next was a 30” Snook and Bob put 2 more Snook in the boat. We were running out of shrimp and time, it was now after 6:30 and Bob hooked another one, screaming drag and all of a sudden, we had an aerial show, approximately 40 lb. Tarpon went airborne and spit the hook. It was time to call it a day, all the fish were caught in the last 2.5 hours of fishing. Great day putting 6 Snook in the boat, 2 Black Drum, and jumped a Tarpon. Not many can fish like Bob, six hours standing the entire time, casting and being patient waiting for the bite without asking “have you ever fished over there”, “can we move”, etc. I put fish in the boat because I’m patient and know that the bite will turn on but if you keep moving to other spots, you will miss the bite at each of them.
