Pulled it out of the freezer, something that we've been dragging our feet on. Push came to shove here the last few days as with the crop of wild blueberries we're getting and the bear bait we keep in that freezer.....something had to move. Tub is 30 inches........it's going to stink and generally be a mess.......but it's out a LONG ways from the barn and the barn is a long ways from the house so the only thing it'll bother while it macerates is the buzzards. On them it'll act like a repellent!! In a couple of weeks it'll be ready for the first water change and the first picking of what has loosened off of it.

I have done it, took about 6 months. If you can go in and pick it, you are a much stronger stomached man than I. I just dumped the water and floating skin once a month. ( while wearing a cartridge resperator). 🤢

Why not just let the fire ants and maggots do their thing? Ruin the bone?

I did an 8’er It wasn’t hard. Careful u collect the teeth that fall out. Used a pressure washer (carefully) to get the gunk off after. Soaked it w/ women’s hair peroxide (40% I think) to whiten it. Good luck with whatever u do!

Why not just let the fire ants and maggots do their thing? Ruin the bone? Does not get as clean as fast........and can get permanently stained......and the maceration removes the fat....

why not just boil it down Boiling will blow all of the bone apart. It’s amazing how many shards you will have, and almost impossible to put back together. There are many ways to do it. Macerated is pretty easy and cheap. And good ol fashion fun

Ben, when I set the teeth back in. I used a little block of modeling clay. Just make little balls and partially fill the cavity just enough to hold the tooth where you want it. Top it off with a little epoxy to lock it in.
I also don’t care for the bleached look, I actually put a light stain on mine when done. I ain’t no taxidermist, I do like to play around though.

Man that looks and probably smells like fun! Yeah I’m just kidding…Any chance a critter may spoil the process?

Like the “culvert” Ben! Repurposing at its finest! You like those? Florida Power & Light replaced the towers on their 500KV line through a section of our place a couple of years ago and as they were taking the old ones to the scrap yard anyway they said if we'd mark which sections we wanted to take they'd leave them. Those are base sections.....over 24 inches inside, 5/16 or maybe even 3/8 thick of some sort of special alloy that browns up but does not rust fast.........and they are over 40 feet long. We kept those two and had one of the guys in the club carry off a good 20 more. Just like with the old oil in the drip torches........frugality is in my nature.......Louann calls me cheap......

i always use beetles or super worms, never on a gator head but pretty sure they would make quick work of that as well.

You put dawn detergent in with the water? After the most of it is done.......really helps remove the residual fat......
