Hi everyone,
I'm looking to dive into the world of hunting with dogs here in South and Central Florida, and could really use some guidance from y'all. I have a one-year-old Redbone Coonhound that I've been training in tracking (coon pelts + scents), and I'm looking to take him out to a WMA that allows for hunting with dogs. There's a few around okeechobee that I found, but I'm open to any suggestions you may have.
Could anyone advise on the best places to start hunting with dogs given that I live all the way down in Homestead and realistically can only go so far as Central Florida? What type of game would you recommend I focus on? Are there any groups or meetings I can go check out?
I’m all ears for any tips on regulations, or personal experiences you think might help me get started on the right foot here.
Thanks in advance!

Never done it myself, but I’m told that some people run coonhounds in the Corbett WMA. That would be the closest to you. Heard similar about Richloam WMA NE of Tampa.
Met some others that run them in the Kissimmee River PUA when the regulations allow.
Others run them in the Three Lakes and Bull Creek WMA’s during the few weeks when they are legal.
Closest coon hunting club to you is in Scottsmoore. They get permits to train a couple of months out of the year on a few WMA’s local to that area. They also hold several UKC sanctioned hunts throughout the year.
Is your hound papered through either UKC or PKC or is it a grade dog?

I will look into those WMAs and clubs. He's an AKC dog from Lori Mills out of Sidearm Kennels in Mobil. In order to participate in those events are they required to be from those kennel clubs?

Get you a good Garmin Alpha system and get your hound tone broke so you can control him and that will give you the ability to coon hunt much smaller private parcels of land, talk to any farmers that grow corn and deer hunters who have corn feeders as the coons give both of them a fit, I coon hunted as a boy up until I got about 16 then I went into rut and started other types of hunting, LOL.
