I saw it again about two months ago. It was pretty amazing as a story and as a movie. Somewhere along the way we no longer had to eke out a living through farming in a poor soil environment. That deer probably provided them a little protein in the end.

The bear in the chase scene was from a zoo or animal park, basically tame. And the dogs were real bear dogs.
Good thing they got the chase on the first take as the bear was never seen again.

I hope we ALL have our kids and grand kids watch it. It shows the real Florida and real life and death.
You cannot have life without death.

The book is way better than the movie... The Movie is very good...
The book goes way more in depth.....
BTW.... Jody is the actual yearling.... Not Flag....
Flag sort of represents growing to adult hood....
But the book is really about Jody growing from a child to a man.

More than just a "coming of age" story it's a window into the culture of a people in a place at a time.
"South Moon Under"...............read that!
So much of what we argue about, and a whole lot of what gets ascribed to "race" is in reality "culture". And culture is LEARNED not genetically determined.

Great movie. We saw it when I was a kid in middle school. Another kid in my school (a year or two older than me) was named Murray Jarman. His father is Claude Jarman, the then child actor who played the role of Jody in the movie. So, I suspect that might be part of the reason why we saw that that particular movie. Regardless, it was very good.
