Well, seeing my day/night flares are approaching expiration I'm kinda torn..
Either get another set of pyro or think about a eflare and flag set.
Now seeing the resq acr or the eflare from tektite .space is a consideration.
Or just get 2 Solas flares and carry the expired ones as well.
I wonder if the ac unity flare gun has insert for 12 guage flares..hmm
Then what about the old penguins? They were a 300' aerial if I remember

I use both. Never hurts to have backup!

Same situation for me this year - I bought the battery powered blinky flare for night - supposed to be good to 10 miles and is real bright on 3 C batteries. Came with a whistle and orange flag with circle and box on it. Not really so sure how well either will do - no-one pays attention to stuff these days.
Decided to update my orange smoke flare and carry the fresh expiring one and a new one. Can't miss that during daytime.
Also bought new ARC PLB w the infrared strobe included. That would be a good one to have if foggy.

Now something to meet regs, but also knowing that not many pay attention to white lights that are 75 candelpower. Nor flags.. but orange smoke and aerial flares may get attention. Seeing flare tests I'm not real impressed by them except solas smoke, and 25mm + aerials.. Parachute with long burn time would be good. The question I have is since you can carry out of date flares for backup, can you also carry non USCG rated flares? I know they won't count as saftey requirements.. But a 26.5mm Bosnian flare pistol and 3 star red signal flares may get attention.. they also have single red star.. 10 rds in a wax sealed box..
They even have hulls that take a shotgun primer..and powdered chalk and cardboard disks, and caps..It may be fun to work up a powdered chalk round.

Interesting! I see the flares and such as an overlapping system. Starts w radio and steps out from there. Anchor stops drifting, sea anchor helps ride out a storm, flag catches attention, waving, use TM to head closer in, etc. In an emergency, things go a lil faster pace. Use the sound horn and smoke flare to get attention if radio aint cutting it. Im on public numbers in sight of shore most of the time and rarely turn motor off… Drifting out at sea is a lil diff for sure.

Realistically I'll be 3 miles out at this time, but who knows it might be a really good day to venture further sometime..those Yugoslavia model 57 flare pistols are starting to have a appeal.. made in the "manly man" era..
Looking at some solas parachute flares as well, they are probally expired, but cheap enough to take a chance on for a 9 pak of craft beer.
Yeah I understand the overlapping layer theme..lots of uses for that thought process..

Not brass, all steel. The new production Bosnian ones (AC Unity) are poly with a steel barrel. All the others are older vintage. Wish I could go in the wayback machine and pick some up along with all the other surplus eastern comblock stuff then.

I remember when sportsmans guide first came out, they had all kinds of this stuff.

Sportsman's guide, cdnn, Atlantic, sarco, centerfire, jg sales, classic, all the c&r and surplus dealers, They used to be everywhere for 50-75 bux.. all the cold War era stockpiles got sold off back then from European countries short on cash.. Most dried up now and flares can still be found in sealed wax boxes for 60 bux, except for smoke flares which are more scarce..
But then again while it wouldn't have as much collectible cool, for what I'd have in 20 flares and a Yugoslavia flare gun I'm in plb territory..so that's probably the smarter play..
Now for the question of the day..since it's Mayday (May 1) afterall..
Why isn't there like a black friday sale on flares, plb, epirb, But on Mayday?

I ended up with 12 12 ga aerial flares and gun, 3 handheld red and a orange smoke..put them in waterproof box..
And yes I'm looking at plb, with screen and reply.. the inshore boat will get 3 handheld, and the expired ones..

I agree w PLB - I got the Res-Q-Link View.
Gonna feel weird when USCG/FWC checks and I hand em a blinker & flag as opposed to unopened pack of flares.
Did get a new fire extinguisher, they are rated for up to 12 yrs now. I put my old one in my dad's 14 ft flats boat.
Also picked up a LiPo4 battery. Weighs like 1/2 of what an old style battery does - messes w yer mind...
Trying all these new things. Tired of spending $.

How much sulfur fumes does the blinky light put out? LOL...
(I just lit the 4 expired flares, only 1 lit, and I used it to light the others..)
Coupon FREESHIP24 for over 50$ from ACR.. yeah I'm thinking about a PLB..

If it won't light, I'm lighting it. also have considered the possibility of lighting a spare gas can and setting it adrift to get attention. I did the free shipping w ACR.
