About 30 some years ago I had a battery powered hook sharpener. You stuck the point of the hook in a hole and a rotating stone wheel would go around the hook and give you the perfect point. Unfortunately it was lost, misplaced etc. Today when looking on Amazon, Ebay, and Google I couldn't find anything like that. There are several different kinds of manual stones and the electric ones are just a spinning stone you put the hook up against to sharpen it but nothing like what described above. Have any of you guys come across something like that or know where I could get one?

Had one......like you said...30 odd years ago. And now that you mention it I've not seen one anyplace in years, not even at one of the many garage sales we go to for recreation.
Though, I kind of understand why. Seems that over the last 12-15 years, maybe longer, the sharpness of better quality hooks has obviated the need for one on new hooks. On used hooks it seems that far more folks just replace rather than dressing the tip. That said......I still keep a stone......and it get's used now and again.

Never used that gadget... What I have used for many, many years is a 4" mill bastard file (and I buy them by the box - six at a time - the Nicholson brand). My files never leave the shop. On the water I use a Tiemco ceramic stone sharpener to dress up hooks that need it. Yes those super premium hooks from the orient are selling well these days and never need sharpening until you nick a rock or a hard jawed fish on the water... but many, many standard hooks absolutely need sharpening before use...

I use a diamond fingernail file to tune up the hooks on my offshore gear, 7/0 and up.

Nichols mill bastard files are all I use. I use them on all my freshwater gear and frog gigs.
We used to sharpen 1500 to 2000, Mustad 7698B 10/0 hooks per trip for swordfish and tunas, so needless to say, I've sharpened more than my fair share of hooks, and gaffs. You should also sharpen them into a "diamond" shaped tip if looking down from the point... usually a couple strokes along the back side of the point (keeping the same angle as the inside of the factory hook point edge) and it will dig into your fingernail. A couple more light strokes along the inside (keeping the same beveled, factory edge) will knock off any unwanted wire edge.
Hopefully I explained that good enough. It's the only proper (and easy) way to get a GREAT edge on a hook, inmho.

I fish every day. I fish relatively light tackle...20-30lb leader max...most of my leaders get chafed and I re-tie constantly just to save a hook for a few more minutes. I can hardly imagine even keeping a hook for a few hours, minutes, much less a day, or needing a hook sharpener. The hooks I buy are beyond sharp. I lose a few every day.

I wear a Leatherman multi tool with a diamond file that I use for hooks. It's not the cheapest but I use it for something every day.

I've had the texas Tackle Point Maker for about 35 years. I've used it for all the non pre-sharpened , chemically sharpened hooks. I also use it to grind down guides before wrapping them on a rod. Texas Tackle Point Maker

Years ago I use the Berkeley line stripper/ hook sharpener at the shop. I predominantly fished rivers in chest waders and that thing had no place to stay dry so I went with a small file on a lanyard. Lol Attachments:
