I would guess January. I believe a deer's gestation period is around 200 days, so add 165 days to the date of the picture and you will be in the ballpark.

I saw the first spotted fawn here in Dixie on 6/27/24. Running the calculations puts conception right around 12/9/2023. Seems quite a bit late for up here unless the gals conceived on a second rut. FWC rut map points to primary rut between Mid September to Late October for this area.

When you have 10 does for every buck, it's kind of hard to have a definite rut. I would say you can back you dates up a little because does probably don't bring their fawns out for a week or two after birth, at least that's what I have gathered watching my backyard deer.

Regarding the number of does being seen here are a couple of thoughts (my observations). 1) A skewed buck to doe ratio can string out a rut. More does can mean a longer rut as they cycle in and out. I’ve seen rutting deer in central part of state go from the normal first of November through the end of December on one WMA.
2) In Florida, you see a less intense rut than the far northern environs where winter requires the deer breed and go into their winter survival phase to conserve calories. There also appears to be some genetic differences in our Whitetail herd that might influence the rut in specific areas. Remember Florida swapped Turkeys to other states for deer many years ago.
3) it appears the increase in predators (cats, yotes, bears) result in it taking more does to actually produce deer that survive to adulthood.
Just my observations over the last forty plus years of woods ramblings and hunting.

I've made a lot of mock scrapes in June/July in mid-FL counties, and had plenty of bucks hit them. But, the other day I found the first natural scrape I've seen in July in Alachua. Threw a cam on it and sure enough a couple of 4pts in velvet are hitting the licking branch.

That Bama buck is an old timer with good genetics. If there’s sufficient acreage to hunt, someone should harvest that one. I wouldn’t shoot him off the porch, but that’s just me. I like the hunt and the kill that caps the hunt. Don’t care for just shooting a fine deer because it’s there.

Swampdog, I agree with you and I don't believe my friend will shoot that deer, he likes watching them too much. He only has 17 acres, so it wouldn't be much hunting. He's lived there for about 20 years and only killed 1 buck and it scored in the 150s. He says he regretted shooting it, would have rather just watched it.

Those suburban bucks know the second they are being hunted. I wouldn’t shoot a yard pet but given a little hunting pressure it’s far from a canned hunt. But I agree with the neighbor, what I wouldn’t give to just have some deer to watch in my yard while drinking my coffee in the morning
