I missed drawing a quota one year with 9 pts, so there's that. What's funny is that I drew the same permit the year before and had to return because of a late planned out of state hunt.

this should be my last year deer hunting in south florida , 40 plus years on 20 plus wmas and they all suck compared to what they were years ago. guys who started deer hunting in south florida in the last 20 years or so have no clue how bad the management of the deer has been.

Is it mismanagement or a combo: In a 2012 study, scientists showed that sightings of raccoons, opossums, bobcats, rabbits, foxes, and other mammals in the region have declined more than 80 percent since the mid-1990s.

Panthers and pythons had Don a double whammy on deer in South Florida. Had a former ENP superintendent tell me face to face the small mammals were nearly gone around 2010-2012 timeframe. Few years ago we saw several shooter bucks on camera before season. By the time of archery opening and through ML we saw none. And not much in the way of does either.

Chalk up the decline of productive public land deer/all hunting in MOST of South Florida to the following 3 things:
1. Urban sprawl/ growth.
2. The invasion of invasives; including humans (see growth above), plants, and animals.
3. Poor public land management; particularly the unnaturally sustained high water levels. This also includes the overall management through politics rather than sound science. You can also pencil in a overabundance of locked/limited/greatly hindered access where there should not be any, or where there should be more.
This is the story behind the woes of South Florida deer hunting.

I know several packs of hog dogs that have become fond of treeing the cats. Would love to see what a pack of genuine lion hounds could do down here.

Actually, the panther biologists were looking for a new houndsman not too long before Roy died. Pretty particular on what the dogs needed to be like though. Most curs are biters, so they wouldn’t meet the required specs.

Just for the record to any officer reading this, the above post was for comedic purposes only and I have never intended or attempted to harass or harm our beloved state mammal.

With having property now in the North part of the state, I'm looking to apply for quotas at WMAs in the state I had not previously considered. Where I'm running in to trouble is determining what are the better WMAs to apply for. Harvest data is incomplete or non-existent for some areas. How else would you determine otherwise? Is it just historical knowledge?

You can look at some harvest reports at hunterstoolbox.gooutdoorsflorida. It wasn't easy for me to figure how to use, I'm not tech savvy. I used it in turkey season checking on what WMAs produced. When we checked a bird in it showed up in the wmas report almost immediately.

Theres deer in just about any WMA (disclosure; I suck at deer hunting). Turkeys arent at as many places so that might take more investigation.

Credit where credit it due. Thank you Wayvis! I must have missed the original link.
The tool proved useful though as it turned me onto a property that was flying under the radar for me. Actually had never heard of it but looks like a quality wma based on the report data.

Got 2 the first day then hunted Javelins for a week till we got tired of them. RIP Roy..

Longtime lurker, recently-registered and first time poster. We’re three days out from phase 1 quotas, always an exciting time of year! Need to put some meat in the freezer this year, so purposely applying to a few anterless WMAs. Best of luck to all.

I have four.... And I still will probably not get one... Or at Spirit...
And I have not been down there much this spring.....
I got both Influenza A and Influenza B at the same time.... It quickly went into pneumonia in both lungs.... And I went into Sepsis.... And My Auto immune blood platelet disorder that has not been much of an issue in about 3 years reared its ugly head because of everything
my immune system was trying to fight...
without being dramatic... I almost died....
I was down there on like March second or third..... After that I got my ass kicked... I went down there three weeks ago..... I have mostly been resting and editing photos
I never got to on the weekends...
