No pilchards so tried for ballyhoo, first on the patches then on the reef in 50' off Ocean Reef. Immediately the YT came up but no ballyhoo. Got 11 pushing a pound each. Pretty blah blah. Saw a big yellow jack so I put out a larger bait but got a 20# black grouper instead. After I released it I could see 2 more blacks swimming under the boat. Water was crystal clear with ZERO current. Decided to go deep to some yelloweye numbers I have. Nobody home, still no current. Went halfway to the Elbow and still no current and marked no fish anywhere. Tried three spots in 220'-250' drifting in hopes of a mutton but boat barely moved and marked nothing. Called it quits at 12:00. All the boats sailfishing in the morning quickly disappeared. Stopped at one spot in 280' and saw a boat already there land an Almaco and they were fighting what was probably an AJ. All I marked on that spot were jacks. Ugh! No chatter on the radio and no sign of life anywhere. No bait being chased, so splashes, nothing jumping, just dead water. Heard from my contact on the River that the ballyhoo guy told him this is the worst year he's ever seen.

Last three weeks were the slowest fishing I've seen in KL since I've been fishing here. Bait disappeared, no Ballyhoo anywhere, and although I've been getting a lot of good marks the fish have lockjaw. Don't know what the problem is, but something's very wrong.

I'm still figuring things out here, saw that the "spinning fish disease" was observed in Largo Sound this weekend, wondering if that's got anything to do with the lack of bait

It’s been that way off of Broward County too. Last week we had to work our ass off to get a few legal size vermilions to have a meal. I don’t even try to anchor up on the reef off of Broward county anymore because if you start a chum line, you have clueless boaters and jet skiers that are oblivious to everything and they come right through it.

The massive influx of yankees with seemingly endless money and wannabes spawned by the proliferation of how to slay fish vdeos on the internet has done no favors to old salts like us in terms of having a peaceful and productive time on the water these days. It actually makes me not like calm days anymore which is sad. You have to go out on shitty days now to get away from them.

Don't fish or dive on the weekends anymore. Not worth the aggravation caused by googans.

More boats on weekdays now than there were on weekends in the 70s.
