I've got a small pot call that works great for close work, like when a bird is 50 to 100 yds out. It makes great soft clucks, purrs, and whines, the calls that a happy feeding hen makes. It also makes a good soft tree yelp. It is not good for any hard calling like lost yelping, cackles, or fighting purrs. This call is free, I made it from an old beer can. If you want to make one it is super simple. All you need is the bottom half of a plastic snuff can and an old beer can. I prefer one of the old Busch or Bud aluminum tab top cans that you find in the woods. Find one that the bottom is not pitted or corroded. Take the snuff can, remove the labels and drill holes in the bottom. I generally drill 3-⅜ or 4 or 5-¼ in holes. Take a razor knife and cut the beer can in half. Try to cut it from the inside out. Take a little liquid soap and wipe around the inside and start sliding the dip can in with the bottom of the dip can facing up. When you get it bottomed out take the razor knife and trim the beer can to the bottom of the dip can. This time cut from the outside in and take a file and clean it up. Take some coarse steel wool or sand paper and polish the bottom of the beer can and you are finished. I generally use a striker from other pot calls but you can make one from a hardwood dowel and piece of dried corn cob for the top of the striker. I've also used a large Styrofoam egg shaped fishing bobber for the top. You can also use a piece of fiberglass from an old flag pole, the ones used on airboats and bicycles for a waterproof striker. The length you cut them will affect the sound on the call. One thing that works for me is to run the pot a little damp(not wet)even with a wood striker. I think the aluminum is so soft that it builds up on the striker.
