I couldn’t go out in the morning yesterday (26th) even though it was beautiful. Around 4:30, I finished some work and ran out the inlet. Around 200 ft, I was passing a weed patch and saw a few little mahi scatter. So I threw the lines in and got no takers. Trolled to 650 found weeds everywhere. Lots of life. Had one big knockdown that got the back of a hoo, but no hook.
Headed back in, and was trolling 150-250 around 7 when birds got active and I started seeing bait schools at the top. Finally got a 32” mahi that hit on a weed line at 150. Decided that was a good way to end the day. Had her filleted and in a pan by 8:15. ———- Went out this morning. Lots of patches of weeds. Started trolling at 450. Had a decent mahi (30” ish) coming in when something changed… it got heavy then too light. Sure enough something bit the back 1/2 off.
Caught 4 short mahi between 650-800. The weeds started scattering and I headed to the reef line. Caught another short mahi at 180.
Exciting day, but not a lot to show for it. I did keep the 1/2 mahi because there was a lot of meat there.
Question: is that legal? He was dead and probably 15 inches as half a fish.

Although it doesn't make sense in this case, it isn't considered legal. The portion you brought in would have to be 20" for a Dolphin. If they did allow bit off fish to be landed short, people would be cutting the tails off of just short fish claiming predator attack. That's why they cannot make exceptions.

Pretty much, but LEO has to be discerning as well. The head off a 10-15# fish looks a lot diff than a 19 inch fish with it's tail hacked off to make it look like it was shark bit.
Sounds like a good day - too bad the sharks are increasing cause finning them is no longer legal.

Thanks guys. Good to know for the future.
In 40+ years, I’ve never had a mahi chomped in half. I will have to ask my dad if he has had it happen.
I did see a large marlin trail one into the boat once. Then it grabbed the next ballyhoo we put out.

Prior to the size limit regulations, it wasn’t unheard of to catch a little peanut dolphin when on a school, and send it down deep on a heavy rod. Wahoo and big dolphin, lurking beneath the school, like those little ones.

Don’t want to start another thread.
Went out again this morning 6/28. But this time I was alone.
Found patchy and scattered most of the way out. Got two dolphin around 750. One was short. The other looked short and jumped off the line about 20 yards back.
Caught the biggest hardtail I’ve ever seen. I only catch them as bait in the panhandle on a sabiki, but got this trolling past a weed patch. He was probably 15”. Also got a few almaco jacks going past weed patches
Anyway, past about 800 it got real choppy. I dealt with it to about 1500, but the weeds were scattered and it got rougher as I went east.
Coming in, there were beautiful patches and lines at 750. But, all the sportsman boats and charter boats never seemed to catch anything.
Meh day in terms of fish, but great to be out on the water.
