Yesterday in Vero the Dove showed up in big numbers, lets hope some ducks do as well.
Scouted a few marshes over the weekend and they didn't look so good here, but I hear some areas of Fl are loaded up with teal.

snipe where outa control saturday must have jumped 200 walking fields and ditches looking for a hog, did see 2 groups of teal flying but no idea where there going since this wma was bone dry , after yesterday ,today and tomorrow there should be plenty of water in the ponds, couple good cold fronts and this place should be epic for ducks and snipe.

Was out over the weekend and found one lonely snipe.. like you said the fields were dry, flag ponds were dry.
That all changes now with this rain, bring them on!

Heard the snipe are thick. Deer hunting sucks. Hopefully they stick around a bit. Deer hunting sucks. Headed to the favorite impound this weekend for ducks. Past 3 weekends of public deer hunting was enough for me. Have I ever mentioned deer hunting sucks?

Up here in the Big Bend we have NO Acorns in a big Hurricane swath thru my woods. Perry south to Steinhatchee. Usually I see woodies every day, hear them chirping in the swamps. They eat Acorns..We don't have any...

Saw more snipe today than the entire previous season. First day of bird season for us! Pete........you bring back memories!! Not so much of snipe/woodcock but of the "small game" hunts we used to go on. Had a friend.....a environmental engineer I went to college with.....with whom I/we'd go on long walks in the Nassau WMA. Back then......50 YEARS!.....the timber companies would pule the rakings from the last harvest in windrows rather than in piles and we'd take advantage of that "structure" ( just like with fishing! ) to go on LONG walks with the shotguns. Rabbits......snipe......and more.......... And when we came to a oak head, squirrels.........! Some of the best eating ever was the result of those walks, at least it seemed so at the time. Browned with onions and then set into the pressure cooker ( do people even use these anymore? We still do. )......serve it all over rice. Interesting how "hunting" changes. So many today have never had a squirrel......way better than rabbits, whether cottontail or marsh. Almost all the rabbits we got back then were marsh rabbits. Oh......and we did not have dogs. Just Jeff and I wandering about, meandering, watching, kicking into stuff. Oh to be young again.

But with 2 GSPs, a German wire haired pointer, a Sussex spaniel and a basset hound (dedicated rabbit dog). We have the birds and rabbits covered. Mostly hunt sand hills and flatwoods that have a decent burn regime and one really nice wet prairie. Opening day we came home with a snipe and a quail. We will save up for a nice meal in a week or so. I spatchcock the birds and pan fry in an iron skillet. The rabbits, mostly cottontails although an occasional marsh rabbit, get various treatments, including braising kinda like Ossu Buco for the old tough ones.
After the hunt we have a picnic, yesterday we had french bread and cheese, pickled garlic, homemade hog sausage and liver pate, Guinness stout, maybe a shot of good scotch, anchovies, sardines, apple and cucumber slices and some other odds and ends. Ends a nice day in the woods.
I have 2 squirrel in the freezer, probably fry them as they are young.
We have been doing this since I got Bartram, 13 years ago.

That’s a great time cyclist! Saturday after running the hounds we fired up a couple of table top grills and had sausages using tortilla wraps for sandwiches. Some summer sausage, venison cubed, cheeses with the summer sausage and crackers. Washed down with whatever, and dessert was a few lies about hunts of the past. It was awesome.

Sounds like a lot of fun and delicious! running hounds... I take it you're deer hunting. Way back before the bird dogs I have now, me and my buddy Dave (guy with the basset hound) ran deer. We walked, and ran!, trying to keep up with a walker, black and tan coonhound and Rhodesian/blood hound mix. Never had much luck, and the deer dog crews that we ran into thought we were nuts. City boys. Until they discovered the walker hound and coonhound were superior to their beagles and never failed to run a deer, and lots of times to their beagles. They tolerated us after a while and liked it when our dogs were in the woods. We showed up late one morning, two dudes and 3 dogs all piled into a POS Jeep Cherokee, the dog hunters were lining the dirt road as far as we could see, and we could hear the hounds coming our way. We parked off to the side and waited for the show. The dogs grew louder and louder and everyone was about to die with anticipation....when an armadillo hauled as across the road followed by the pack. One of the hunters turned to us disgusted and said, better get your dogs in the woods, we haven't run a damn deer yet.

Today...in a soaking rain, 3 of us and 5 dogs...got 5 quail and 1 snipe. Saw 4 rabbits but no shots were presented.
To be honest....only one of the quails was wild we think...as opposed to 100%. The rest, Wisconsin fatties were released quail that didn't fly much. The dogs, mostly the rabbit hunting basset and the youngest...a wire haired pointing Griffon killed birds on the ground in 100% thick below the waist cover of young shrub and tree growth.
My German shorthairs were stumped...lots of pointing but no flying birds left them miffed.
Did manage 1 snipe in the marsh on the way back to the car.
Wonderful day, but I was not prepared for the constant rain...1/8 inch expected and 1 inch+ received. None of us were...ended up pretty much soaking wet after may hours. The dogs immediately curled up in the car upon our return...after a brisk toweling off. But it was warm and the hunting and game was constant.
I post some pics.
I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving!

Thanks for sharing the pics. I been on many a rainy day foray. When it’s cold and rainy, there’s nothing like finally getting dry, having something warm to drink, kicking back and enjoying a fire or a heated room.
