So I'm getting ready to go deer hunting in Florida for the first time. (Hunted out of state before)
Got my license, got my hunter safety exam certificate, got my deer permit,
Wanted to read over all the state rules and regulations since I'm new here. And I came across this:
"Taking wildlife with any centerfire semi-automatic rifle having a magazine capacity of more than five rounds is prohibited"
It was my intention to go with my m1 garand, which has a "magazine capacity" of 8 rounds. But I obviously want to be in compliance with the law.
I know they make 5 round "hunting clips" for the gun, if I purchased these and only brought those, would I be in compliance with the law? Or would the gun itself still be prohibited?
If it's prohibited that's OK, just gives me an excuse to buy a new hunting rifle.

That's what I was thinking. But I just wanted to double check. I know firearms laws can be weird

But also make sure to check the regulation specific to the area you want to hunt. Note that some do not allow centerfire at all.

Each WMA, WCA, PUA, and Forest usually has its own area specific rules. Read up on the area you plan on hunting and know before you go, but if rifles are allowed you will need 5 or less round magazines.

Also to be clear does that mean I'm good with a 5 round clip, if the magazine would still normally chamber 8?

WMA Finder Linksee link above As long as the clip you use in your M1 for deer hunting can only hold 5 rounds, you are legal. Make sure you are not using full metal jacket bullets, they are not legal for deer hunting. Soft point, open tip match, plastic tip are all ok to use.

Ps.... You can use the 8 round clip for hog hunting..... Don't do this...I was wrong...use the 5 round clip instead

I thought it was a 4 round mag and 1 in chamber for 5 total. A five round clip would be 6 correct? Or did I read it wrong?

Some guns will hold 6 ... like an old Winchester bolt

I don’t think clip and magazine are technically the same thing, but the recommended 5-round clip should be viewed the same as a plugged magazine on a shotgun.

WHy do the sell guns that only hold 4 in mag? Sure, you get get after market mags but doesn't make them legal. If I'm wrong it changed at some point.

Prohibited methods and equipment for taking game mammals and resident game birds • This document doesn't address or advise persons as to local ordinances prohibiting the discharge of firearms or as to the validity of such ordinances. • Centerfire semi-automatic rifles having magazine capacities of more than five rounds.

I was always under the impression that you were allowed a 5 round capacity, 4 in the magazine plus 1 in the chamber. However the regulations states a 5 round magazine. It's a little more clear when hunting migratory birds, the regs states a capacity of 3, 1 in the chamber and 2 in the magazine.

I do believe it used to be 5 total. A few years back not sure exactly when (as I started bowling ing exclusively) it changed to 5 magazine capacity which actually cleared it up a bit. 1 in chamber 5 in mag total of 6. But then again FWC has a habit of making things clear as mud. Don't take anyone's word read it for yourself. It is in print in black and white. Exercise your mastery of the English language. It is clear. And whether you are referring to a clip (M1 Garand) or the rest magazines they as ( far as capacity are the same).

4 or 5 rounds is a lot to put in a deer, and still a lot to use on two deer. It’s funny that the mag limit doesn’t apply to all rifles for deer.
As for the OP, I hope you go ahead and use the product that was suggested to limit the rifle capacity and enjoy yourself. I would do the same.

If you feel you could be compromised if stopped by a LEO, you could simply carry a couple of extra rifles or enlist a gun porter to help you with greater ammo capacity😉

Thought M1's were bolt...looks like regs y'all post are for semi-auto?

M1 Garand is a semi-auto, the Springfield '03A3 was a bolt action.
