Last Saturday morning I was sitting on the porch, coming off a nasty cold that had me laying on the couch for 2 days. I started plinking and adjusting my boys old pellet rifles for something to do. When I got done with them, I decided to clean off their old .243 that has been sitting for 3-4 years now. Gave it a good wipe down and made 1 60yrd shot that was dead center about 1”low, just right. Fast forward to Sunday afternoon and I had just enough time and energy to get out to the woods for a quick sit. I decided “what the heck” and grabbed the little gun. Got settled in about 4:15 and nothing was moving at all, one of those dead silent evenings. Could have heard a squirrel fart. At 5:05 a doe and 2 fawns stepped out at 25 yrds from the ground blind, I still can’t get over how the hell they can do that without making a single sound in heavy cover. I’m sitting a 90 yard old fire lane that is about 12’ wide, tight quarters but it has worked over and over again for many years now. Within seconds, the doe starts looking away from me down the lane, the third time she popped up and looked away I had a pretty good idea what was coming. While she is doing that I start to shoulder the gun and before I get on the scope I see him step out at 80 yards. Then everything was just super quick. Doe bolts out, buck locks up and gets jittery, I count 3 on one side and put it on his chest. Drilled him quartering to me inside the front shoulder, he did a front flip, got to his feet again and did a stiff legged flop. It was 5:10. So… we got a little more meat in the freezer, I gave y’all something to read about and I justified why I keep all these guns around. I think I’ll pull out the .06 tomorrow and go for a repeat 🙂.

A nice report and a great result. I was told that deer are so silent in cover, because they lift their legs up high and move slowly. I have tried that, but you can still hear me coming.

Well that worked out nicely. What round were you shooting?

Well that worked out nicely. What round were you shooting? I'm down to half a box of Hornady 100 gr. interlock. They have been fairly accurate but, the ones I have recovered don't get much expansion. They do seem to hold together though. I'm about to order some Federal Fusion 95gr. to try out. I've seen some good reviews of those w/ good expansion and weight retainage.

A buddy of mine swears by the Federal Fusion in his 270. I have a box of the FFs and the Corelokts that I should have tested weeks ago with my 6.5.

My son shoots the soft point Winchester Deer Season rounds from his 243 and has had great success and very good expansion. FYI

I know a guy who used to use that cartridge all the time. Can’t think of a time it didn’t do its job.

I shot the original Hornady Custom BTSP for many years in my .300wm. When they switched to the American Whitetail stuff, they lost something IMHO. Still a decent round just not quite what is was. I still have 1 box of the old stuff stashed away for opportunities to hunt longer distance. My son has kind of adopted the .300 at this point, I’m getting too old to lug that thing around like I used to.

I have an old Winchester model 100 in .243, got it from our neighbor with a Weaver scope for $100 when I was 15. Shot my first Deer with it. The guy I bought it from handloaded some 60 GR hollow points for it. He shot a Deer with one of the bullets on Disney property right before or after they bought it (must have been legal somehow to hunt it IDK?). Nasty round.

Good deal. I had a .243 BAR, killed a couple of deer with it. That's what I have and have had for 30 years. It's the only rifle I've ever hunted deer with. I don't know how many I've killed but I've only lost 1. I will say I'm very cautious and only take good shots that I know I can put in the right place. I haven't hunted in a number of years but my stepson has finally settled down and he wants me to hunt with him some so I need to break out the 243 and do a little shooting.

I shot 2 pigs on Friday, and one on Saturday with my Ruger 243 that I was given about 35 years ago when I was 13 or 14. It still shoots sweet. I carried my 10 year old on Sunday and he shot a pig at 65 yds with my 556 AR. He loves that gun and it’s his 4th pig so far. I’m going to try to get him his first deer this weekend.
