Hey fellow hunters,
I'm excited to embark on my journey to hunt and shoot my first deer and hogs, and I'm hoping to connect with experienced hunters who can offer guidance and possibly even make some new friends who share the same passion.
I'm a newcomer to hunting, and I understand the importance of safety and ethical hunting practices for both deer and hogs. If anyone is willing to share their knowledge, tips, or perhaps even join me on a hunt, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Additionally, I'm interested in learning about available hunting properties or areas where I can pursue deer and hogs. I'm open to both public land and private land opportunities and would love to hear your recommendations.
Feel free to reply here or send me a direct message. Let's make this hunting season a memorable one and forge some lasting hunting friendships.
Thanks in advance for your support and advice!
Best regards, Luis

How big is your gun, “luis from Hernando”? 12 gauge and a crossbow. That’s a good start. How old are you? And how did you learn to use your shotgun and crossbow?

That’s a good start. How old are you? And how did you learn to use your shotgun and crossbow? I'm 32 years old, didn't grow up with hunting at all. I would love to pass down the tradition to my 6 year old son. I've owned many guns throughout my lifetime and I have had the pleasure of going on a guided hunt with a YouTuber but have not gone at it solo.

I’m not really helping out. Quite honestly I thought your post was a copy/paste because many here have seen it a million times. Get out and do some leg work and come back with more specific questions. You gotta at least show that you are trying.

I'm game to help Luis.....
First go to myfwcc.com You will find all the info needed to start hunting in Florida. Hunt dates, bag limits, licence requirements, WMA brochures (places to hunt) and quota application dates. For archery hunting you will need a compound or recurve/long bow. You can only use a cross bow if you have a doctors note saying you can't pull a bow due to injury or water ever. But you can use the cross bow during general gun hunts and small game hunts. Small game hunts you can also hunt hogs. Read the WMA brochures carefully, season dates and quota permit requirements vary from area to area. A fair number of hunters on here hunt the south zone so their tighter than a tick stuck to the duty hole about giving out information. But don't you worry I'm one county north of you and Ill burn some spots for you in this part of the state and get you started. Questions just ask......

next month i will be removing my treestands from a couple wmas down south of you and could show you the ropes of removing stands and properly using a game cart. getting the balance just right , securing the stands to the cart so not to risk cart flipping on its side and spilling out all the ice and beverages are all important lessons a new hunter must learn.

Have you taken the hunter safety course? If not that needs to be step one. I never hunter before either, you learn a lot during that course.

Yes! I highly suggest this, I did this last year it’s very informative and fun, you’ll meet many new and experienced hunters. Chuck Echenique ran it when I took my trip, super nice and knowledgeable guy! I believe he also runs his own outfitter when he’s not putting these events on for adults and the youth. I had the opportunity to talk with dog trackers, fwc officers, and more experienced hunters. Honestly it was a great start and a huge confidence booster! This is my 4th season hunting and I was really beating myself up trying to figure this out on my own. After attending that hunt it really dug my heel in! What really helps too is hunting a lot of small game, I enjoy squirrel hunting and it gives me the opportunity to do alot of scouting for the upcoming season. If you do alot of scouting during that time you’ll have a good start for July / august to scout again. Just don’t be disappointed when season starts and you see a hundred stands lol because it happens and that’s public.

Even though I dont participate in FHF I have taken many youth on hunts. The retention rate for hunters aged 20-30 is very high compared to retaining hunters aged 10-15. Chuck is a great guy and this is a great program. Youth Hunting Program of Florida is also a great program for those under 16 years of age as well.

Yes on the youth hunts for sure. Reach out to them even if your kid isn’t quite ready to hunt. Worst case is you can make alot of connections, camp a night or two and learn how to dress a deer ( among other things). NWTF “Gator Gobblers “ do deer and turkey up here in Alachua county, they are a fine bunch of folks.
