Hunter Safety Systems make several real good ones. I have the Hybrid. The pockets are perfect and it's kinda lightweight. Put a Razor Letter opener thing in the front pocket to cut yourself out if needed and your Good to Go. Your getting hard learned advise from a hunter of over 50 years. 10 Ladder stands , 2 climbers , about 5 ground chairs. I ain't there to make friends... Kill One bro I like the razor idea vs that relief strap thing. Of course any woodsman should always have a decent knife at the ready...always....

Take a look at rock climbing harnesses. Rock climbers use them everyday for falls and slips. God forbid, but if you have a fall in one you will end up facing the tree and not hung by there by the scruff of your neck like you would with a traditional tree harness.

Ever what you decide to use, I would recommend that you suspend yourself in it and try getting back in your stand or getting to the ground. Personally I use a climbing harness with a Tree stand Wingman. The Wingman is a belay device that slows your rate of fall.

Thats why the Hunter Safety system has a Tension relief strap.. If your hanging you put your foot in the strap and you take pressure off your neck and you can just stand up and figure out your next move. Any system is better than the one that comes with a climber..

Actually you don't take pressure off of your neck, the tension relief straps take the pressure off your legs. I go back to my previous post, try it all out, it ain't that easy.

Besides TrT, you might take a rock climbing harness and construe some sort of sex toy, use your imagination.😉

Does anyone have any suggestions for a tree stand harness? The one that came with my climber is a pita! I was looking at the one from summit but it’s a little pricey. Saftey first though so it ain’t all about the money. I may go back to using the cheap ones that come with our stands. They’re light and zero chance of making any artificial noise Zero chance of me not fully latching any buckle or snap I know they don’t have pockets but how much stuff do you need to put in them when you’re hunting?

The main issue I have with the harness that came with my climber, is that the straps are only like a half inch wide, don’t get me wrong once you get it on you forget it’s there. However with the straps being so small, it’s almost impossible to get it on without twisting them, you can forget trying to put in on in the dark. I do tree work at my 9-5 I’m used to wearing a fall arrest systems. If I took a spill in the manufactures harness I do believe it would save me from dying, but with the straps that small, I would consider losing blood flow to my extremities a lot quicker than one with something larger.
It’s like when I took my motorcycle endorsement, we dress for the slide when we ride because, it’s not if you fall, It’s when you fall. We will all take a spill at some point. Wether it’s our fault or not.

Reading this makes me think I should start carrying the rope thing I have that allows me to take the strap pressure off my legs were I to fall

Heading back into the woods this weekend after some squirrels and hopefully a hog! Deer season might be over and I might be empty handed this year but I’m staying on em, plenty of tasty critters out there still.
With these temp drops this weekend, is it a safe assumption that the hogs will be out moving around more in the day? Or is that just a myth, the plan is to shoot some squirrels wile scouting a hog spot for a morning / evening sit.
Any extra advice or input is greatly appreciated!

not a myth on wmas i hunt, archery blackpowder and gun normally hot as hell and if i see a pig its very early in the morning or after suns gone down. last month or so the few really chilly mornings ive seen hogs up till noon. cooler temps do increase hog movement in my opinion. good luck

Deer is open through the 28th on Green Swamp East. Peak rut there is 2/1 so they will be chasing. I'll be there the final weekend for sure.

You'll see some chasing between Xmas and New years but the primary date of conception last year was Feb 1st per the area biologist. The Rut map appears to line up as well.

I've run cams in there for years. It's definitely happening in late-Dec. Not trying to be argumentative here at all BTW. I wish you the best of luck, and hope they're running around stupid for you.
I'm not sure how the biologist would know when conception occurred last year unless they did doe harvests last spring/summer. But, yes, the rut map does suggest a Feb conception date.
There are few issues with the rut map, however:
1. It was formulated from a rather small sample size. I've seen some of the data they used. It's understandable, however, because it's not like they wanted to go out and shoot 100 does. 2. It was made before the APRs went into effect. 3. It is an average of conception dates. If you take into account does bred in their second, third, or later estrous cycles, it's going to skew the average later. This means the first phase should be a bit earlier on all locations on that map.
Every part of the state I've hunted has an earlier rut than what is on that map. When you factor in the fact that buck movement peaks before conception, some of the best times to kill a buck in parts of the state is a month before the dates listed on the map. FL is a weird place for sure.

when most areas are quota only so you got 2 maybe 3 days hitting the peak rut is a roll of the dice,, areas i hunt down south ive seen the rut start as early as mid july to late august. ive just about giving up trying to hit it right. whatever i get or whenever i can go i go.

I'm probably putting to much faith into their forecasting abilities too.

The Seeking Phase right before actual breeding is when you want to hunt. Mean conception date means your a week or two late on the Boys night out.

That's why I suggested you could see "rut" behavior a month before the dates on the chart. To add to it, and if I'm not mistaken, about 28 days before does are ready to breed they start their cycle - and you can bet that bucks can smell it in the air.

Well, I went back at it this weekend. Hung 3 cameras up for a qouta hunt coming up towards the end of November. Most of the game trails were hard to make out with all the extra debris on the ground. I did find a couple of rubs, but no scrapes. Bumped a few deer and man the acorn crop this year is thick!! Seems like all the oaks are dropping em.
How is everyone else making out with scouting since the storms?

Went to one of my New spots today just to see if my climber rode out the Cat 4 we had. It's fine and the spot is really tight and thick..or was.. Now I can see and shoot quite nicely as the hurricane really opened up the spot. Pulled a Cam card I had there expecting nothing but falling trees and branches on it. Surprise , Suprise...At least 6 bucks and 4 hogs on the cam. I'll be there tomm. at zero dark thirty.

So far I’ve only gotten a bunch of does, one small rack buck and a small cluster of hogs. It’s only been a week maybe my luck will change. I’m planning to move the cameras again a week before the hunt to a new area, encase I need a back up plan.
