Had a friend who had an unpleasant experience in a canoe in Homosassa but I know they are all over some areas of Fl.
What's FWC doing to rid these invasive species that don't belong in Florida
I hear its illegal to shoot them? Why

To be honest, if I had a bunch of monkeys being a constant pain in the ass at my house I would shoot them. Same with a alligator, or python, or coyote, or my neighbors stray dog. Swift judgment and effective punishment beats a continuous pain in the ass.

Its not illegal to shoot them on private land.
The FWC does more about them than they like to talk about publicly.

Good, but theyre no diff than an iguana, and tell FWC if you see them to grow some nutzz and quit being MYFWCC Iguanas exactly. The public had a conniption when the FWC publicly advocated hunting iguanas with airguns. It made national news after the antis started crying about it. Hypothetically, let’s assume the FWC has a secret and unofficial eradication program against the monkeys. How do you think the public would react to that if they already get weepy over lizards?

Its not illegal to shoot them on private land. The FWC does more about them than they like to talk about publicly. i think the problem is, for many people, monkeys are cute and they saw them as pets on TV shows and movies when they were growing up. They think these are friendly playful creatures. they don't realize these monkeys will bite and carry disease. So, the FWC can't really talk about killing them, but say things like keeping the population under control. It could upset some people to know the FWC is endorsing killing monkeys. Some idiots even think they are native to Florida.

We had a whole group (troop?) of monkeys cross the road in front of us in the ONF somewhere between Salt Springs and Palatka, there were 5-8 adults and a few carrying babies. I always heard they were up there but this was the first time I'd seen any and it was quite surprising to me (and my wife and kids). I figured there may be a monkey here or there in FL but they apparently reproduce and survive...

some idiot step on the monkey island in Homosassa? I was thinking the same thing. If the monkeys were on the island and they came on to it what else did they expect. Do they think it's ok to climb into the tiger cage at the zoo?

The only way your friend had a bad experience with monkeys on Homasassa was that he was a retard...
The only Monkeys along the Homasassa are three spider monkeys on a private Island in the river... Spider monkeys cannot swim... So the only way your friend had a bad experience is that your friend went past the warning signs around the island.... And if your friend did go past the warning signs... His bad experience was a Hefty Fine...
And if your friend did have this bad experience (of being fined) it did not happen recently..... Because the three monkeys on Monkey island have been residing in Hernando County while Monkey island is improved... So they can upgrade the island to support a couple more monkeys.

What's next an attack by Bigfoot? Bigfoot is harmless and peaceful Depends on which Indians you ask. Most tribes regarded them as dangerous.

They must of went extinct or they'd been seen by now. LOL Well, supposedly they’re seen now quite a bit. But given the lack of trail camera evidence, yes recent extinction is the most likely possibility of the several.

a million years ago there was a bunch of them around dania jai lie , hi lie , high lye. whatever there was a bunch.
The Dania beach Troop is still there... They are alive and well... .There are few charitable groups that raise funds to support those Monkeys... Those are Vervet Monkeys... and have been there for about 80 years.....
NONE of them has kicked a Football Wide left or wide right...
And none of those Monkeys have had a bad experience with the privately owned Spider Monkeys on a private island in the Homasassa River... In a canoe.. In a place that that it would be dangerous to actually be canoeing.... ANumber1 or one of his cronies would likely run them over out of spite...
I have been on that river I do not know how many times in my life.... I have never seen a canoe near the Monkey Island... I have seen a few kayaks... But never a
canoe...
But I have seen the Homasassa Monkeys a BUNCH of times.... Monkeys you cannot get close enough to for them to bother you, without trespassing...
The Same Monkeys that have not even been on the River for about two years... They are residing at a private wildlife facility while the owner of the island makes major
renovations to the island....

We used to see the Dania monkeys in the port from time to time but not since they dredged all the mangroves out to expand the south turning notch.
