As you know when leaving a deserted island, you always tie a full bottle of rum to a palm tree near the beach in the event someone gets shipwrecked, they will have something to drink! This morning while fishing the Roosevelt Bridge, there was two empty bottles of Maker’s Mark Whiskey (picture 1) on the bridge fender. Not sure if they enjoyed it while fishing or hid the evidence after they struck the bridge, a big chunk of concrete (picture 2) is missing from the bridge piling.
I decided to relax and enjoy my cup of tea and give Tom a head start, first spot and Tom puts a Snook in the boat, followed by his personal best, Black Drum at 5 lbs. He was on fire, as a few casts later he beat his personal best with a 7 lb. Black Drum. Great way to start the morning.
We moved West working docks and I decided it was time for me to begin, my first cast barely hit the water and I was hooked up landing a Snook. A few docks further my popping cork slowly went under water, I stuck her pretty good with a hard hook set and the water erupted. I pulled “her” out from under the dock, which we were very close to and got “her” out in open water to the boat and realized I was hooked up to a trophy! She ran under the boat about four times with me pulling her out each time but she was still too green and fast to get her in the net, I had her on top of the water realizing she was very upper 30’s possibly over 40” when I pulled the hook. That was heartbreaking. I refer to as “her” as the big Snook are females. I landed 3 more Snook but nothing size worthy. Tom landed another Snook also and we called it a day after 5 hours. I didn’t mention that the wind was howling at probably 25 knots sustained and the river had 2 foot seas, the ocean is 5 – 7 with some 9’s mixed in at 6 seconds. Pretty rough although you can always find somewhere in the river to get out of the wind and that is what we did.
