I wasn’t able to get over to me quota hunt at hatchet creek like I wanted to, so this morning after going to check on the hog I shot at my neighbor’s house last night I noticed a buck in the back yard that I thought was a newcomer and I decided I wanted to harvest something with the weather being so nice. So I slipped back to my bedroom where I had left my bow sitting on the ledge of the bay window. I carefully slid the window up that doesn’t have a screen in it. I waited for a broadside shot with his head up. After I got drawn back my wife asks from the bed “What are you doing?”, to which I answered “About to shoot that buck from last night.” Well I guess all the hog shooting (I tend to aim about halfway back) I’ve done lately has messed me up, because I watched my arrow disappear back further than anyone would do on purpose.
Since I messed that up, I decided that I needed to go take care of that hog. It wasn’t dead yet despite being shot up with 22 rounds. At least one did something useful by causing him to be a paraplegic. I had run out of ammo so I gave him all I could with a 4” Mora knife about 6 times over in the lung. He was trying to bite me so I only did one side. All went still right after that so I assumed the deed was done. I was quite surprised to find him alive when I rolled up on him this morning with the wheelbarrow to haul him off. I was about to grab him when that biting action started back up. Seeing as he was what I would still call “fresh” I got on the phone to see if I could find someone who wanted him.
About then I realized it was about time to get ready for church and I have a live hog and a probably no-so-dead deer. I resolved that the best thing to do was forget about the deer until the afternoon, which I did. When I got home I grabbed some toilet paper to aid in marking the blood trail I hoped I would find. There was blood, although not a lot, but after about 50 yards I found him, just barely out of sight of the bedroom window. I was thankful that it went that easy. I let the dog out so she could practice trailing, and boy does she need it. I took my time getting every piece of meat off the carcass as I could. I smoked the neck which I had mostly removed the meat from and split the ribs and tossed them in the pressure cooker for 35 minutes followed by searing on the grill. Today was a good day.
