I want to get two feeders up on my property relatively soon. I'm leaning towards broadcast feeders of some sort over a gravity feeders. Debating on whether to buy a manufactured setup or a couple 55gal drums and the feeder heads.
Looking for suggestions

If/once you live there I suggest manual feeding. It encourages them to get used to you. I don’t have any actual feeder experience.

I don’t use feeders, but I’m familiar with feeders and have filled quite a few over the years when helping friends on their leases. Most run a few gravity and a few spinners. My personal observations are that gravity feeders get hit more during the night than spinners that feed after sunrise and before sunset. I’ve also seen gravity feeders get a little “caked” from heavy blowing rains at the dump points. BTW you can attract bears to systematically hit your feeders and actually destroy them depending on the setup. Have fun with them whatever you choose.

Cheapest Moultrie spinner (4 aa batteries) on a large metal garbage can. Hang from tripod with a cheap harbor freight boat winch.

Definitely have to bear proof your feeders in most of Florida. I think a metal drum with a funnel and the moultrie spinners are best bang for buck. That said, I was gifted two Texas Hunter hanging feeders that are by far the best I’ve ever used. They replaced one of the timers for me that was still working but the LED was unreadable. For free. Even though I was not the original purchaser, and they are at least 10 years old. If I needed more feeders I’d probably bite the bullet and buy once, cry once, just for the quality of construction, longevity, and customer service.

Thank you guys. I think I'm going to go with two 55 gal steel drums, the moultrie pro spinners, and harbor freight winches. I have a mixture of SS and galvanized fasteners that were left over from my boat trailer rebuild I can put to use too. I should be able to put together 2 big hanging feeders for under $200 this way.

Scuff sand the top of the lids and spray them heavy. Anything helps, even if it’s just leftover rattle can paint, that’s the first thing that will rust out. Even 55 gal drums are not what they used to be.

Picked up the drums this afternoon. Single use food grade with a lid and band for $20 each. Can't beat that

I have had zero issues since I switched to Castaways 4 or 5 years ago. They are a bit pricey , but the reliability has been fantastic. I got sick and tired of dealing with all the others eventually turning into large drums of sour mash during the humid summer months. Not to mention the varmit damage and the cheap crappy motors that never lasted too long. Their customer service is outstanding as well.

My buddy runs two Castaways 200# hanging feeders. I just couldn't take myself to spend a grand on two feeders right out of the gate. Figure the two barrel feeders will get me started and also last a bit

I have a drum on a high tripod with a programmable spinner We don’t have bears but goodness the frickin squirrels and coons will destroy a feeder (the food and the equipment) I grease the legs every couple months with petroleum jelly and that works.

I managed to get up the the property late Saturday night. Sunday I mowed an area with my mower set to the lowest setting. Then I put down a no till brassica seed mix and lightly watered it in. Built, setup, and tested the feeder before loading it with 280#s of corn. Dug a small hole and dropped a trophy rock in it so that 1/2 was exposed as well. Moved a cell camera onto the plot/feeder area and cut a shooting lane. The lane is about 60 yards long and opens to the left into a round area at the end about 1/2 the size of a basketball court. The shooting lane and the plot/feeder area combined are much like a backwards facing upper case P.

I hate to say that I've been so swamped between life and work that I haven't had a free day to hunt since season opened. But that changes this weekend! Saturday sundown and Sunday sunup I'll be sitting in MY TREE. Haven't seen any shooters on camera but I'll just be happy to be in a tree observing his great creation.

Good luck JS, I also will be in a tree this weekend. I’ve only gotten out a couple times so far, and last Saturday I could have had a heat stroke. It’s just not that much fun when it’s that hot.

Saturday morning... tomorrow. Old Logging Tram road at the head of Big Warrior Creek. They either walk in front of me or swim 300 yards. Shot 5 Bucks thru the years there so far. 2 Hogs. It's my favorite spot. Wood ducks swimming behind me and water turkeys diving off trees. Private club , Big and cheap.

I ran and watched feeder for about twenty years. Amazing at first......like sitting at a Zoo Movie. All the Critters. I was never compfortable "Taking" deer at or near a feeder and certifiably let many walk....handful of unused doe tags.
Tripod base feeder. Ran for a year and a half....then busted by a growing bear population within a conservation corridor. I cheered the Bears on!
Other feeders Busted. Eventually,I ran a cable between two pine trees, cool ratchet set up, feeder bin hangs between pines at nine feet high. It was a $100 Feeder motor set up. I abandoned the entire private lease feeder setup recently.
I have a private acreage property within a WMA however there will not be a feeder on the place.

My friends Dad..now passed had some guys from a little 90 acre piece of property that went over and knocked on his door one morning and told him to get them damm cows off their land because they were messing up his feeder. Next time they came up from Tampa they had no camp. He burned them out 3 times. He was a retired Game Warden old school , Pot smuggling redneck.

I stopped my feeders. Bears trashed them too many times. After 2 years with no feeders the bears STILL come looking.
