Escolar. Anyone try? Seems like the east coast at night, maybe like swordfishing? Caught plenty in the Caribbean, particularly in the Windward Passage. They were known as trickle ass fish because if you ate them, you were surely going to have diarrhea. Same deal even when caught in cooler waters. The Haitians would eat them. We used to trade them a couple escolars for a bottle of Barbancourt, but you had dam sure better check that bottle to make sure the seal wasn't broken, boy. Those Haitians were sneaky like that. You could easily find yourself trading fish for a bottle of sea water! Escolars have beautiful while meat though. Also known as oil fish. I'll pass... Pomfrets are WAY better to eat and they don't give you the sheets.

You most certainly do not want an entire fillet.

I had escolar once, was not impressed, I'd rather have hamachi or tuna.
Didn't get the runs though, guess I didn't eat enough.

Anybody ever caught a Spearfish? Hawaii, 35 years ago. Quite common. We considered them trash fish.

Anyone else ever caught a Opah? Most call them moonfish here. The Hawaiians call 'em opahs..
Very pretty and unique. The Hawaiians used to say there were something like 16 different flavors of meat on them. I've eaten them a few times but didn't think much of it. Very dark red meat.

Didn't catch it but one time about 30 miles off CK we came across a HUGE mola mola.
Got right on top of it, and it didn't care. Of course this was before all cellphones had cameras...

They don't seem to care at all! I've caught them in several oceans but by far the biggest one was out of Hawaii. They have tiny mouths considering their size. Barely big enough to get a baseball past most of the time. The giant we caught in Hawaii was big enough to swallow a basketball. One of the guys jumped over the side and took some under water pics with his 35mm underwater camera. I have/had some of the pics. (My ex wife probably took them during her "fleece the husband" episode.) Anyway, when that fish turned and looked at my deck hand it scared the holy ghost out of him even though he knew the fish was pretty harmless. Getting in the water with giant creatures is one way to get the blood flowing.

If it wasn't a somewhat overcast November day I would have jumped in to swim with it. I tried to reach down and touch it bit it stayed just out of range.
Its eyes were the size of grapefruits.

What's the one species you've never caught but want to more than any other? For me it's a decent tiger shark. I've fished for them on many occasions but always seem to catch damned bull sharks. 10k seems full of things! I need to put more effort into trying for tigers. What do you all want to catch? I never saw your original post. Many years ago, I fished a lady from Venice, in Boca Grande. Summers, we shark fished at her pleasure, using tarpon for chum, and bait. We caught two tiger shark world records, a 1001lb, and a 316lb on 20lb, as I recall. Both records have probably been broken. Her name is Connie Cora, and I framed the pages from the IGFA book. We got her boyfriend a 750lb hammer on 50lb, also a record at the time, but I believe has been broken also. I'm sure this was 87-88ish. The sharks followed the tarpon as they migrated. Was pretty easy pickings. Edit, to add... One of the worst things I ever did, the big tiger was a female, and started spitting pups, her babies. She was roped off on the side of the boat, a 25 Seacraft. I shoved my hand up her to stop her.....the pups were at least 5 pounds apiece. At the time it seemed logical. We didnt want her to lose weight. It haunted me for years, and to this day. I'm crying, just typing this. Changed my whole perspective after that. That was the last shark/fish I killed for sport.

I caught a big fat 8ft bracket tiger at cedar key on 1/2 ladyfish. Could have put a basketball in its mouth. Body was bigger around than a 55-gallon drum. Buddy got a skinny 10 ft-class off canaveral once.
Used to hang off the front of a 17 ft montauk while a kid - dad would run me up on the ocean sunfish and turtles for a quick pet. Fun days. Them sunfish are gigantic. We also used to catch a lot of atlantic bonito off the turtles during their fall migration south.

I’ve caught a lot of freshwater fish and a lot of inshore saltwater as well. Caught one huge Goliath around the old phosphate dock piling years ago. Caught a close to the record Blackfin tuna off NE Florida coast. Today I’m back to enjoying freshwater fishing with a few trips for mangroves snapper. I like to eat fish bout as much as I like catching them. Some of you folks have experienced some awesome deep water fishing experiences. My hunting bug overcame my fishing bug early and I’ve not recovered except for catching a mess today for dinner.

My hunting bug overcame my fishing bug early and I’ve not recovered except for catching a mess today for dinner. Hunting takes much more commitment than fishing. The failure rate will discourage most. Mr. Romytomy, Commitment to what? I hunted wild quail on the finest plantations that ever existed, in South Georgia. I stopped counting 10 points, stupid ass deer, when I was around 20, the dead ones, I shot. The Elk in Colorado seemed more or less like a joke to me, whether at 50 yards or 500 yards. I won't even bother to explain Montana, the only challenge is staying warm. Not even sure how to define failure, hunting while not being cold, is the only challenge. But since you threw down the stupid gaunlet, tell me how many times you caught 100 snook in one day. Or, 100 redfish, in one day. I won't discuss tarpon, no need to muddy the waters. How about a super grand slam, inshore, and offshore, on the same effing day. Is that commitment, or just blind luck? I'm 99% sure I'm the only human that has ever done it, and I'm at 3 times, and counting. How much commitment does it take to catch live lobster at sunup, and use them for bait, and actually hook and land a dozen cubera snapper, all north of 50lbs, before lunch? How about stupid sailfish.....go and cast net, say 300 live ballyhoo at daylight, and put 100 sailfish to the leader, again before lunch, mostly 3 and 4 at a time, and explain to me how that is just dumb luck. FWIW, there are like 15 people on planet earth that can put 300 live ballyhoo, in a well, a livewell that can handle it, on even a remotely consistent basis. Don't ever compare hunting to fishing. There is no comparison, at the highest levels. Not even in the same galaxy. Putting three rounds in a rifle, and waiting all day, is hardly the definition of skill, nor commitment.........stupidity, maybe. For anyone reading this, I will agree to any challenge, concerning something relevant and realistic. Hunting season is now, or coming up. Pick your poison. I will go easy and say, for every eight point you drop, I will put 5 wahoo, 5 bull dolphin, 5 yelliowfin tuna, all north of 40 lbs, all on ice to be eaten, on the same day. You hunters pick the day. Electronic, photo id, date verification, will determine the winner. I will even go in a 30 kt wind. I banged 3 of 3 today. The last one was especially rewarding, after she inhaled an eightball. She left about an hour ago, so I will sleep late this morning. That's two in a row with zero gag reflex, not that I'm counting.

Hell that reminds me of the time I was staying in the Bridge Suite at Atlantis in the Bahamas. I met a couple of English actresses in the casino. Stella Cox and Jessica Jensen were their names. They told me they'd been in California shooting scenes for a company called Dog Fart Productions! I'll never forget a name like that! Apparently they'd had a few days real hard work and needed some down time so stayed there before flying back home. I told them I was fishing on my boat 'Sweet Punani' the next day and they wanted to come. We partied hard that night but still set out early. We caught a lot of snapper before a reel screamed and I knew I was into a big shark. I was on my second bottle of Blantons by this time and Stella found it hilarious to suggest I needed to finish the second bottle BEFORE i got the shark to the boat. So there I am, lift, swig, reel, repeat... About 25 minutes later I'm winning and the fish is tiring. Jessica cries "No, he's gonna do it". She then whispers something in Stella's ear and before I know it, the two of them had pulled my shorts down. Jess at the front, Stella behind me and those two start tromboning me right there with them switching places every couple of minutes. I tell ya Dave, I nearly threw the pole in the ocean right there! I can barely stand, I can't concentrate, I want my hands elsewhere and not on the pole.. And then it happens. One of the most important and memorable times of my entire life. I'd just taken a massive gulp of bourbon finishing the bottle as I got the estimated 900lb hammerhead to the boat on 40lb line. And I realise I'd just had a real trophy fish and real quality poontang double header all at the same freaking time!! And it hit me real hard, I realised I was the greatest god dam angler ever to grace planet earth! Right at that moment I heard a gentle thud as I watched Jessica's head rock back a few inches before nearly choking with Stella laughing her hear off! To this day I still can't remember how I got that boat back to the dock. I sold it a couple of weeks later and have never been back to the Bahamas since, because I know whatever happens there, I'll never have as good a time there as I did on that day! I've never killed anything for sport. Never felt the need to. I whacked a big old female cheetah in Namibia once, but that was because my land owner friend was losing too much livestock to cheetahs and lions and she was in the wrong place at the wrong time when we were hunting sable. But other than that I only kill what I'm gonna eat these days.

Give me a morning, that's 5:00 am until noon. On land I know. I will bring you the deer, field dressed. If the law allows, legal season, I'd force you to clean the toms,, and wear the beards to lunch. There would be at least four of them. I will throw in another dozen wild quail, that I shot to keep the dogs on point. I wise man who pretty much taught me....always said it ain't braggin' if you back it up......... Something beat into me from my teens

One of them I caught myself. all on electrics so not a really great fight. They eat pretty good, especially sushi, but will give you a nasty care of the runs if you eat too much.
