Heading down to troubleshoot the generator on my uncles RV. Was running poorly and he had a guy come to the house on put on a new carb. After replacing the carb generator gets no power, stone dead. Guy looked for blown fuses and bad relays and came up with bubkis. Uncle got his money back and a new carb but has a stone dead generator.
Me and a buddy will try and trace it down. Obviously sounds electrical. Anybody out there familiar with these Cummings generators. Any advice will be appreciated.

Does it run without generating electricity or does it just not run at all?

Ya, everything was pretty general and the RV forums lead to dead ends.

Is it locked up? Can you turn it over at all?

Sounds like a dead start battery for Generator or start solenoid.

Had to knock a wire loose I would think. Changing a carb won't stop it from turning over.

I’m concerned that it locked up on you. Try to find a way to turn it over two complete revolutions, even if you can do it by hand
If it turns over then the next thing I would check is the starter.

Sounds like a dead start battery for Generator or start solenoid. This is where we will start, gonna try and jump it off and see what happens.

If you can get it turning over with the starter and it doesn’t fire give it a LITTLE squirt of starting fluid and see if it pops or runs on the fluid. If it doesn’t then you could have a fuel or electric ignition problem.

Put another spark plug on a plug wire and see if you have spark

Occams razor. Sounds like a bad ground. Does it have 12v (preferably more) at the battery? They're really simple to work on. Jump the lugs on the starter also. 1, spark 2. Fuel 3. Air

If it doesn’t then you could have a fuel or electric ignition problem. If we can get it cranking I’ll be happy. My first instinct since it’s stone dead is electric issue. Had a similar issue with my boat. Intermittent start and then went stone dead. Turned out to be salt build up on the battery leads. Took the Dremmel out and put fresh metal on all the leads and cranked right up. Fingers crossed it’s that simple😉

Try to jump the starter relay and see if the motor turns over. Some models also have a oil sensor that will stop everything if it is low on oil. Kind of odd that it was fine until the guy changed the carb. i would bet he knocked a wire loose, if the unit had not been sitting a long time.

Pull the plug & try turning it over, you may have had a bad float witch will leak fuel into the cylinder & cause a fluid lock. If fuel comes out of the cylinder & it turns over early drain & change the oil.

This is a lot of thread. To not even know if the battery is connected?

This is a lot of thread. To not even know if the battery is connected? That will be first on the list. Check if batteries are charged and connected.

So the mobile RV “mechanic” who changed out the carb didn’t disconnect the batteries. He must have arced something and blew the in-line 150 amp fuse.
After replacing the fuse we got it turning over. It was stumbling and running like shit. $5.31 spark plug got that bitch purring like a lonely kitten.
The carb was never the problem. All it needed was a fucking spark plug!!! Got a free lunch, beer, and an excuse to hang with one of my favorite people in the world.
K.I.S.S…. Yup
