How many of you have young children (17 and younger) or grandkids that are allowed to play video games such as
Mortal Kombat, Manhunt 2, Grand Theft Auto, Postal, et al.?
Have you ever paid attention to idle chatter amongst them and their peers regarding these games?

How many of you have young children (17 and younger) or grandkids that are allowed to play video games such as Mortal Kombat, Manhunt 2, Grand Theft Auto, Postal, et al.? Have you ever paid attention to idle chatter amongst them and their peers regarding these games? I grew up playing violent games. I was about 10-11 when I played the first Mortal Kombat at the movie theater. None of my video games were censored. My brother and cousins grew up the same. I still play violent video games at 43. I’ll probably play video games into old age. Graphic violence alone doesn’t bother me in games or movies. Its a case by case basis. I don’t want to watch a movie or play a game about a serial killer brutalizing civilians (except there is a series of games where one player plays as Jason from Friday the 13th or other slasher villains and other players are the victims fighting against the monster that I think are clever games). I like realistic depictions of warfare and find the shocking violence of war to be a valuable teaching tool. Desensitization is not a bad thing. One can be desensitized while retaining immense compassion. Desensitization simply means you keep your emotions in check and don’t become a blabbering mess when faced with a scary or gory circumstance. I censor my daughter’s games at 5 years old. I expose her to the violence of farm life. She watches me dispatch animals. When she gets older I’ll ease her into seeing examples of humanity’s evil. I’ll let her options in game playing expand accordingly. A person’s unfamiliarity with violence won’t protect them when violence is brought upon them by an evil human or an indifferent predatory animal. The best thing for a young adult is to be prepared for it and to know how to navigate the situation. But not all minds have the character to handle it. |

Those games are a big part of the problem in my opinion.
They more or less glorify the violence and killing.
The reality of the grim deed is lost on the children playing those games

I do not have kids... But I did have a stepson that I raised from the time he was five until he was 15..... I was the only father he knew.... he had no contact with his biological father... I think he had met him a few times before he was old enough to remember..... A couple of times we started the process of me legally adopting him.... The Bio Father was more than willing to waive parental rights to waive back past due child support.... I never went through with it... I divorced his mother in February of 2004...
He was a video game nut.... He was playing violent video games from before his teen years... I did not want him to do so.... His mother said I was over reacting... And they were just games.... Well he just got out of State Prison on July 1st of this year... and will be under supervision until 2036....

My GF is a retired teacher and professes and deeply believes that putting a kid in front of video games et al has a terrible effect on many kids in what is a very important stage in their young lives.

After I played Atari Pong I felt like killing somebody.😎 I played pacman, defender, the old stuff. But my game was Galaga. I was really good at it. I'm certain I turned over at least 4 machines past 1 million points, which took hours of time. Haven't touched a video game of any sort since. I prefer, fishing, , making money, and drinking, although not necessarily in that order. |

If you held down the reset button, while turning the old Atari system on. You got double fire on space invaders.
We also figured out how to get ALL the channels on the old cable boxes( with the dial) using only a properly inserted playing card into the box.
Yeah, we smoked alot of weed, and apparently had too much time on our hands. Made the best of it though 😎

Video games in general are great for disassociation. They're mindless and noncreative. It's very easy for a child to zone out and not have feeling. Of my 3 children only my son plays occasionally. He likes to play basketball, madden, and college football with his friends

I never let any of my the kids play video games. Never bought them any kind of computer games at all. There are way to many things to do besides sit in front of a damn computer. There's hunting, fishing, camping, and just being outside. Just my opinion
