When we remodeled our kitchen my wife wanted one but I absolutely forbade it. One of the worst inventions ever concocted in my opinion. Everyone THINKS they can stuff a half eaten moose carcass down a disposal without a problem somewhere downstream. No thanks. I will continue telling my family to take the garbage out.
Figgered I saved myself countless hours of headaches and work, and thousands $ in plumbing expenses.
I watched my mom unnecessarily work the hell outta my dad for years fixing what seemed like a good idea at the time by trying to run shit through it. He finally had enough and took that fucking thing out and threw it right where the nightly garbage went for the rest of their lives.

My father was a plumbing contractor for just shy of 50 years. Lots of stories but the one that comes to mind is a call for a clogged toilet. When he got to the customers house he found that the wife had tried to flush an entire pan of lasagna down the toilet as they didn't have a disposal and didn't want to throw it out.

Until this house we always had a disposal, we rarely had issues. 1hp and quiet units never let us down.

We've got one in our primary residence but where I've owned other homes on septic, I won't put one in.
Every few days or so I'll put a squirt of Dawn in it while running hot water. No drain clogs ever. If I'm doing something that is greasy or oily, I'll put a some Dawn in that as it grinds.
As above, I'll never put less than a 1 HP in.

I took care of some rental properties back in the day. I well remember finding a stuck disposal full of blue aquarium gravel. Here's Your Sign..
