Didn't know contender made a 19 footer, 21 footer yes. Either way a 50 mile run in the open Atlantic = no thank you! Guess you can aim it and nail it for an hour and see land in no time but Correct, but it's not something that a average kid should be reading about and attempting because someone said it's possible. Hell, it's possible to float from Cuba to Florida on a log too, but most prudent people wouldn't try it unless they were that desperate. A couple young boys were lost out front a few years ago on a calm day in a maintained boat. I think they went out often, but it only takes one wrong, small thing to start a string of events that can lead to a catastrophic ending. If memory serves me the only thing they found was a cooler off the coast of Georgia.

Hey, Wayne Cone took a airboat to Bimini from FL, so anything is possible...

I don't know why everyone thinks a 19' boat is too small to make a crossing. We used to do it all the time in 20' Seacrafts, and occasionally in a Bonefisher or Redfisher with no buddy boat. It's only 25 miles till you are halfway and then you are heading to land. On the Gulf, we regularly run 50 miles to fish and there is no other land till you hit Texas or Mexico. Yes, you have to watch the weather closely, but crossing in a 19' boat is very do-able It all depends upon the Captain and his/her experience and skill. While i wouldn't think about crossing to the Bahamas in a 21 foot boat, I have been 25 miles offshore Cedar Key in a 21 foot Key West and thought nothing of it. Even though you are correct, there isn't any difference between the two, you are 25 miles from land either way, one SEEMS safer than the other in our minds. Strange how we look at things.

^^^ Agreed
I'm sure there's a lot of instances where people have taken 30+ foot vessels over and had to wait days for a window to get back

Gotta play the weather for sure. Can’t be running on a schedule if you have a small boat.
I run what most would call a lake boat and really have to play the weather and know there are limitations.

It is looked at differently, because it is different. Crossing the Gulfstream is not the same as hanging at a 200ft deep grouper hole.
If you cannot understand this, I cannot help you.

The water is unforgiving. No place for mistakes

25 miles out of CK, you will only be in about 50 ft of water.

25 miles out of CK, you will only be in about 50 ft of water. You only need 7’ of water to be in “over your head” 😳

Yep, and just like with private planes, pushing the weather envelope because of a inflexible schedule causes issues and deaths.Had to take a plane back from Marsh Harbor more than once when my schedule didn't fit the weathers and the waves.

What kind of fishing permit do you need? I believe there is a vessel permit and additional fishing permits per individual. You have to declare fishing, spearing and any castneting. Pretty inexpensive overall.(like $20???) Captain took care of it all so I’m not too sure exactly. Geared mostly for people to just go catch/eat what they take (daily). They don’t have all of the size limits that WE enjoy here. 20 reef fish/40 fillets in possession, 10 lobster and 6 conch. (not sure about the pelagic limit). Ice is like $10-$12 a bag so that is a deterrent to overtake also, gotta save room for the beer!
