It is still over 100 and the present situation index is strong. Consumer Confidence dipped below 100 in April and quickly recovered in June. I do not doubt that sometime in 2025 we will see a mild recession. But it isn't very likely before the election. The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index® dipped in June to 100.4 (1985=100), down from 101.3 in May. The Present Situation Index—based on consumers’ assessment of current business and labor market conditions—increased to 141.5 (1985=100) from 140.8 last month.
However, the Expectations Index—based on consumers’ short-term outlook for income, business, and labor market conditions—fell to 73.0 (1985=100) in June, down from 74.9 in May. The Expectations Index has been below 80 (the threshold which usually signals a recession ahead) for five consecutive months.
“Confidence pulled back in June but remained within the same narrow range that’s held throughout the past two years, as strength in current labor market views continued to outweigh concerns about the future. However, if material weaknesses in the labor market appear, Confidence could weaken as the year progresses,” said Dana M. Peterson, Chief Economist at The Conference Board.www.conference-board.org/topics/consumer-confidence

There’s talk now about a possible interest rate hike. Not to mention Saudi Arabia is talking about getting away from the Petro dollar. Who knows?🤔

Internet! More people buy online and not at the brick and mortar stores. You will continue to see brick and mortar stores close. Red Lobster is outdated and the high school kids don't take dates there for fancy dining any more. Same reason a bunch of steakhouses went under in the 90s. Didn't keep up with changing consumer preferences. Rising minimum wages in many states hurting them too. Consumer spending is still strong, the economy hasn't stopped people from spending money yet.

well you aint buying cold beer ,hot chicken wings and big ol live titties in your face on the internet. why is hooters closing 40 stores. They blame it in rising food and labor costs. As I said, rising minimum wage in many states hurting restaurants. Florida is going up $1 a year until it hits $15 in 2026. Tipped wages in Florida is $8.93 and will be over $10 by 2026. The Federal tipped wage was $2.13 an hour. When you got to pay those big titties 4 times as much as you used to, it hurts.

Tight times make a well run business do some cyphering. Siphoning? No, cyphering. You'd have to ask an old person. You have a location that is borderline in good times, you let the good locations carry it. Makes the gross figures look good. Bad times? You cull the puny branches so the rest of the tree stays healthy.

Lotta different reasons for store closings, many due to just trimming off unprofitable locations. Inflation definitely taking a bite, as well as changing consumer habits. Red Lobster was a victim of its sale to a private equity firm in 2014, which then sold off all its real estate for $1.5 billion, so that the stores had to start paying rent. Hooters closed underperforming locations. They've closed 12% of their stores since 2018. Same with 7/11. But don't worry, meat, even though they closed 250, there are still more than 9000 where you can take your girl for a date night dinner.

Hooters here closed under Trump. Has nothing to do with shitty food even shittier service and the land lord trying to double the rent over night. It was definitely Trumps fault. See how that works? Red Lobster had been in such poor shape for 2 decades I'm surprised anybody would want to buy them to begin with. Not sure I know anybody thats earen in one in years. Selling off their realestate, who could have seen this coming? I can not imagine a company wanting to close stores not making money or where crime is very high? Who'd have thought it? Outback steakhouse? We went a few weeks ago specifically because y dad didn't want to wait for a table at Texas Roadhouse. Still waited an hour for a table. Restaurant was less than half full. Took an additional hour to get food. And my cup stayed empty for 30 minutes. I can't understand why people aren't beating the doors down to these places? Meanwhile my local oyster bar/watering hole is packed every night. Just like it has been for 70 years
