I don't work in the car much any more. Today for an oil change the service advisor called me into the shop and showed me that my transmission fluid was dirty and need to be changed. 2018 Silverado with 60k miles. He showed me red transmission fluid and said it should be like that. I said I used work as a mechanic and worked in under car business for 10 years, and we never changed tranny fluid unless it was low or there was a problem. He then said well it's a 60k service item anyway. What do you guys think. Last time it was wanted to change the rear differential fluid....I have lost confidence in these guys

If your going to change it do it now. Worse thing you can do is change it over 100K

Agree with tampaspicer, if you wait too long after 100k then you are better off not to change it as you may loosen up a bunch of gunk that will clog stuff up. I don't change mine at the recommended interval, but check it at each oil change and use color (reddish and mostly clear good; brownish change it) and smell (sweeter smell then good; burnt smell change it) to determine if it needs changed.

I never change trans fluid any more. The most I ever do was change the filter in the pan. Changed it twice on different vehicles years ago and had problems with the transmission afterwards BOTH times.
I just got 210k miles on my Dodge Ram dually trans. It had to be rebuilt finally. Never changed fluid OR filter. Shifted great until the end.

I shot a hole through my floorboard in my Tacoma around 100K. Busted through the transmission return line and the power steering line. I got luck but the transmission got a flush after that and so far so good.

While I consider the maintenance schedules too long for some things, namely transmission and coolant, and I plan to change Trans fluid, filter and put a pan with a drain at 50k miles, and might as well do front/rear/transfer case fluid as well. Transmissions have changed alot over the years, and are running hotter temperatures. (I know the ford's are 220 or so is normal temperature- 250 is maximum) The fluid has changed somewhat as well. So while color could be a consideration for Ford mercon fluid Mercon lv won't have that color consideration. As lv fluid is made to run hotter Temps and turns darker. (See post on page 2 for color of mercon lv with 13k miles on it) Not sure about ulv as I don't have a 10 speed. Yes some of the newer models don't have a drain on Trans pan (my '19 does not) and don't have dipsticks. I've had vehicles that I didn't change fluid in, and some I did rarely. But after working for a decade for a company that used its vehicles hard, but maintained them well showed me the value in it. Rock auto has good prices on things like this..and yes it IS a lot of fluid to do this..17-18 quarts
Any more trucks cost more than the first house I owned, Your milage may vary,
The 10 speed runs a different fluid and procedure is a bit different, but there are videos on it. I'm mainly aware of the one in the truck I drive and tow with.

What mapper said.
I never changed trans fluid and ran millions of miles on a fleet of 10.
Usually traded around 180k or so.
Had very few problems.
That said these 5, 6, 9 speed trannies are a different deal
I changed my 9 speed at 60k. No issues at 90k. Will do again at 120k.
Trans rebuild is expensive nowadays.

Just changed my fuel filter, oil and trans fluid Tuesday on my Duracrap/Allison. I don't change the internal trans filter but I do change the spin on. It's easy enough to do so I do it every 60k to 75k miles.
I mostly do this stuff myself now just to show my 15 year old how to do some basic maintenance. Otherwise I would have someone else do it.
I'm about to the point where I trust the 15 year old to do it by himself so my basic maintenance labor will soon come to a end until he leaves home.

I have a 2018 F150 with the 10 speed transmission. There is no place to even check the fluid level or to add fluid. I don’t even see anything about changing it?
