I'm looking for a place for my teenage son and I to have a decent chance to fill our freezer with hogs and or deer. I live down in citrus county, but all the hunting is basically done here on WMAs. Does anyone have some experience they'd be willing to share on this place? I'd be taking a long weekend late January, taking the Jon boat and camping gear, and hitting it hard for 4 days.

Never been there. Set your sights on having a good time with emphasis on learning the area. Pay attention to the weather before you go. Make sure to include your son in campfire talks and plans for how to hunt during the trip. You don’t say how old he is, but I’m assuming he has some experience. Good luck!

For a chance at both Deer and Hogs in January, I'd hit Green Swamp. Unfortunately I've never been to the wma you spoke of and can't provide any info there. Peak rut in Green Swamp is the last week of January so your chances would be increased.

Swampdog that is excellent advice, he is 16 and does have some experience, but still has a lot to learn. As do I!

Thanks for mentioning Green Swamp, it didn't come up on the WMA finder last night when I was searching late January. Not as many camping options there, but its only 45 minutes from the house. Plus I could scout ahead in the coming weekends.

Sounds like fun trip , camping/hunting from a boat. The best I remember that WMA runs from the Florida line to the coast so there shouldn't be no overcrowding. One thing to keep in mind is the weather. The rivers in the panhandle rise and fall quickly, it can rain 50 or 100 miles north of you and cause flooding downstream. I had some friends hunting along the Blackwater river, they walked in one morning with dry boots and by 10 they came out in chest deep water.

Choctawhatchee WMA is in the new CWD regulations area. Don't know much else about it. Apalachicola WMA is an option. Mostly dog hunt area but hunt the river swamps. Camp at Porter Lake, hunt North of FR13. Check river level, needs to be 8ft or less.

I have hunted land that abuts this WMA just west of Vernon (just north of I-10) for 20 + years. Lots of hogs and woodducks and the deer rut is late so that will improve your chances.
Its a great area but huge and I am only familiar with one portion. That being said I can't imagine you not finding some hogs and ducks and deer.
Weather can be spotty and very cold during this time of year so be prepared.
And best of luck!
PS...on warm days in the afternoon try some catfishing!

My recommendation would be Apalachicola WMA. It's mostly dog hunting but there are plenty of places where they don't run dogs. Big woods up there and plenty of places to hunt.
