A maritime academy is not a bad way to go. Guaranteed work with great pay once you're finished and decide to sail. The other degrees and disciplines may/may not pay so good right out the gate, but they can give a cadet a solid back up plan or career path on shore if they don't want to sail. I wish to hell I went that route instead of UF, but I never found what interested me until I went fishing. BTW, FYI, aTm has a serious shipboard fire fighting school that will make you think you're involved with the real deal. Their fire school is no joke. It isn't for the faint hearted. Look into Maine, Mass, SUNY, Texas AM, and Kings Point. They are "affordable". Kings Point is free, but you need a recommendation letter from someone important to get in there, on top of a good GPA. Maine produces some very good engineers if your son is thinking about going down the ladder to work on machinery. KP is the cream of the crop for deck officers. It's also the hardest to get into. All of them would be a good choice for a college. Kinda like a trade school with a fat degree on the side for good measure. Back in the day there was a merchant marine school in California that focused on the Tuna/Albacre purse sein fishery. My dad wanted to send me there but by the time I graduated from high school my parents had financial difficulties so I had to work at our funeral home. I had a fairly successful life but it sure would have been different if I went that route. You probably made out better financially by not going fishing. Every fisherman I knew was always waiting on the next big check. None of us knew how to be smart with money. Risking your life every day, at the mercy of the elements kinda made money trivial I guess. We had plenty of it usually, but pissed it away as fast as it came. A few of the swordfishing boats started to swap over seasonally for albacore trolling while I was still fishing in the Pacific region. That seemed to be the gentleman's way to make bank while fishing. One guy in particular had it figured out. He hired 5 Pacific Islander beauties while he was down in Tonga (or some other place) and put them to work on deck pulling in albacore all day for about 3 or 4 months. He followed the fish up to Hawaii, and finished his season either in Astoria, Oregon or Southern Cal. Then it was back to Hawaii. He owned and operated the boat and was able to buy his way out of any and all troubles from what I recall. At some point I think he gave up on swordfishing altogether and stuck with the albacore trolling year round. Not much overhead in jigs compared to 7000 to 9000lb of whole squid every month and a couple thousand $1.00 Mustad 7698B 10/0 or 9/0 hooks. Not to mention, traveling the world with smoking hot island girls serving you, and hauling $ for you has a lot of appeal. Old Bruce was a Pimp Daddy.

After a dozen wobbly pops that stair case looks a little intimidating, I’ll just sleep on the couch tonight.

I might make it to the second one before banging my shin and cussing up a storm.
