Rule Change Proposals
Click the link above. Some decent things and some BS. Of note is their plan to deal with over crowding in a panhandle WMA by implementing quota restrictions instead of increasing access to nearby areas. EDIT - Oh I also forgot - they want to ban fanning turkeys during turkey season.

I also see year-round squirrel hunting. How well does squirrel meat eat in the spring and summer? I have no problem with year round squirrel hunting so long as its not a waste to shoot one during the hot parts of the year. We already allow rabbit hunting year round, and I’ve eaten rabbit in the summer with no issue.

You boys btter be very careful how you answer this survey. It's very misleading. Beware of any sentence that claims to "establish" a quota hunt. Some of those proposals to establish something is in fact going to reduce your opportunities. This seems a priority for you NW hunters.
BEWARE of what you're actually being asked to support.
Reminds me of the leading questions once asked about waterfowl hunting years ago.

I'm assuming they meaning reaping turkey. To do this on public land seems suicidal anyway. There are a few states that have a spring squirrel 🐿️ season. Never heard anything about their tastings different during the warmer months.
Add - they do mean reaping and it only applies to WMAs.

Never heard anything about their tastings different during the warmer months. Old timers wouldn’t eat small game in the hot months out of fear of parasites. But of course the internal temperature of a mammal is a constant year round. Best I could figure, it was a leftover and misconstrued tidbit of wisdom from days of screwworms, as frosts do kill back the screwworm flies and that’s what kept screwworms confined to southern latitudes except for years with mild winters.

Squirrels get bot larvae under their skin in the summer. That would probably make them not as appetizing, but I guess it's no worse than picking worms out of amberjacks.

Suicidal or not, that's my prerogative if I want to do it since I'm not hurting anyone. I'd be more concerned if someone were able to use a rifle, but that's not allowed on WMA's either. I'm curious if there are any stats on hunters being shot while using the practice.

Whiners causing problems again.
When will whiners ever learn that whining causes regulation and reduces opportunities for most folks, including them?

I looked through the proposals. Only commented on two. Won't take effect until after the 2024 spring turkey anyway (only care about turkey obviously). The entire quota system with the redraws is a cluster f and didn't see that mentioned. Saw nothing about giving the resident hunters an edge on the quotas but requiring a permit prior to quota applications might. Don't see how that works when the application period is in November.
Reaping of turkey is discussed ad nauseum on turkey forums. IMO not a big deal to me however it goes. Even on private land we don't do it. Our cameras often see trespasser every once in a while that may be trigger happy and has been mentioned it is a rifle legal state on private land. Sneaking behind a fan just doesn't seem like a good idea but if you can legally do it have fun.
I'm betting that in five years almost all WMAs will be quota hunts. We'll see.

If anyone was complaining about overcrowding during the rut, how will they feel when they don't have a permit at all or can now only hunt one weekend of it at most? Correct. I actually read the through every section and I compared the survey with the existing brochures on the wmas I was not familiar with. The ESTABLISHMENT (if passed) of many of these quotas are not only going to limit participants, it will result in a reduction of overall hunt days. Don't fall for these traps! I've said many times over the years that as South FL goes, so too will the rest of the state. It may not happen in your lifetime, but it's coming. We've effectively taken almost every wma down here where it used to be open to deer hunting every day for months (only the first 9 days were quota) and whittled them down to a couple archery weekends, a couple muzzleloader weekends, and a weekend or two of gun hunting; all quota only, and most without exemptions. Honestly, with my life's schedule it doesn't work worth a hill of beans for me the way it's set up. The crazy thing is, as surveys like this trick you into thinking you're voting for more opportunities, you're actually voting yourselves out of existence over the long term. It's a beautiful tactic of the old, "but, you asked for it, you got it!". So be sure of what you're supporting! I found it odd that the deer dog hunters association wanted a bunch of dog registration and tracking stuff mandated... I know deer dog hunting will eventually be outlawed at some point, so was this a move to just keep dog hunting alive for a while longer or because the council thought it is beneficial to their sport? (I get the tracking, not so much a registry). Can anyone elaborate?

Also, be careful about supporting a ban on reaping turkeys. Next step will be gobbler decoys. Then, where does it stop? History has shown that this kind of bullshit only expands in scope as the years tick by. If some dummy wants to crawl behind a fan, so what. That's his foolish business.
It seems to me people not engaged in the practice are just upset about the reapers making a kill while the complainers go home without a turkey. They will, of course, package their efforts to outlaw the practice as a safety concern but the real reason is because they're getting out-hunted by the guy taking risks and putting in the extra work to crawl through the mud and sawgrass.

If you follow what is happening to turkey hunting in many southern states you will see that it is ban this, ban that, then ban some more. Non-res restrictions as well as reaping and gobbler decoys are totally out in many areas. The turkey game is rapidly changing and not for the better IMO. As usual the public land hunter takes it in the butt while the private land guys couldn't care less. Following the seasons and following the limits should be enough but for many it isn't. They want to return to the good old days when a turkey was behind every tree. That won't happen. I will add that I'm still waiting on my FOIA request to FWC on the total number of spring turkeys reported from their mandatory check in system that was in effect the entire season. They are obviously stonewalling.

Lets put a moratorium on any new plans to ban anything by FWC, how many more lies will it take for everyone to figure it out.
OPEN bear season again forever with all that scientific data yall collected, and open a cougar season then we can talk

I'm betting the only way we'll ever see another bear season is if one ambushes a bunch of school kids at a bus stop. The recent bear at Disney news coverage was a hoot. PETA could have written the script.

Was a compromise with regards to landowner conflicts i.e. Joe Blow buys 10 acres on the creek in the middle of a 30,000 acre dog club the calls fwc everything a dog crosses his 10 acres. Designed to identify the repeat offenders and not punish the whole club.

Thanks Art. I figured it was along those lines. It's a shame I guess? It is/was a way of life for a lot of the hunters up that way for generations.

It isn't just turkeys - either folks support all other hunters or we continue with the death by 1,000 cuts. I can care less about turkey hunting but support your right to do it as you wish. More quotas - of course we're gonna have more quotas. There are more people hunting in smaller areas and more aggressively. What good is it to be able to hunt deer from August - February is you can't go without a quota permit?

I find this proposal interesting for a new WMA. Its a hybrid between quota and non-quota hunts. At least someone is thinking outside of the box.
" Telogia Creek WMA - establish open seasons and regulations for a new WMA (12,384 acres) in Liberty County as follows:
Proposed Open Seasons: Duck: during the 9 days of statewide September duck seasons (no quota). Dove: during the first 16 days of the statewide mourning and white-winged dove season (no quota). Archery: 16-day season (no quota). Small game: 42-day season (no quota). General gun (20-day season split into 5 hunts as follows): Three 4-day hunts (no quota), Followed by two 4-day hunts (70 no-cost, quota permits for each hunt, no exemptions). Muzzleloading gun: 4-day season (no quota). Archery/Muzzleloading Gun: 4-day season (no quota). Youth turkey: 2-day season (no quota). Spring turkey (17-day season split into 3 hunts as follows): Two 4-day hunts (35 no-cost, quota permits for each hunt, no exemptions), Followed by one 9-day hunt (no quota)."

Commented on a few items, but all I see is more and more government control by the left-winged FWC employees.
Glad I live close enough to Georgia and Alabama to hunt.

Question, were the turkey “reapers” the same crew that pushed to ban rifles for turkeys in WMAs?

Reaping and reapers are hated (and that's putting it mildly) on many of the national turkey forums not for safety reasons but because some think they make the game way too easy. It does seem unsafe but when it comes to hunting accidents isn't really a factor that anyone has yet shown or can prove. Probably the same for rifles. I don't remember when they outlawed the public land rifles in FL. I remember on the old NWTF forum a FL guy posted a picture and story about a rifle kill. Some then wanted him lynched and that forum has been gone a long time. If someone now would post a story about how they legally reaped a turkey into rifle range a posse would be formed on some forums. We can be an opinionated bunch at times. Following the law and the limits should be good enough but for many it isn't. I hope Florida doesn't get on the "banning" bandwagon.
Add - it would be nice if only residents could apply for the re-draws. The resident needs a little advantage somehow. They sure don't have one now.

I definitely ticked off a lot of people with my rifle hunting posts. I prefer to hunt them with rifles, rimfires back then and air rifles today. Its actually more challenging because you can’t sweep the gun and slap the trigger while vaguely pointing at a red head staring at you. You have to let the turkey cross into your rifle’s crosshair and hit the bird precisely. If I’m meat hunting a turkey, I use a shotgun because its easier. If I’m hunting for sport, I use a rifle. I have also hunted them long range with small caliber centerfires. My best kill is 200 yards. I was with my brother when he popped one at over 300 yards. We used to glass gobblers that way on a hillside in the horsefarm country and only shoot the ones we really wanted. “No not that one, his beard isn’t long enough.” That was great fun.

NM, thought you meant the FS forum. I don’t recall having a presence on the NWTF forum.
Everything is relative when it comes to hunting ethics. I understand the safety argument for using rifles on WMAs, but I wouldn’t tolerate it if it had come from people who push the limits on safe decoy use.
I don’t really care how someone turkey hunts from a sportsmanship perspective. There is no fair chase in nature. Only life and death between predator and prey. So long as its safe and sustainable, I don’t care how someone hunts.

Assume you are talking muzzleloader rifles. I occasionally have used a muzzleloader shotgun on quota hunts. Took one in 2017 at Walk in Water ( gun in avatar pic) and was checked by a LEO. Other than asking what size shot I was loading he was fine with it.
