Spent the first week of Muzzle loader in C-6 Nassau Co. There were 8 bucks killed in the club. Six 8 points and 2 sevens. We had several misses also. Most of the bucks had swollen necks and were all scarred up from fighting. Only saw one 6 point that was actually as chasing a doe. A couple of guys heard grunting. Most of the scrapes were not being tended. All in all, there was quite a bit of movement going on. I saw deer every sit but one. There were a lot of young bucks running around feeling their oats.

It's going on now in Brooksville like clockwork. Every year around Halloween you see a lot of dead bucks on the roads

I killed an 8-pt yesterday morning in Hernando Co. C-4 that was chasing does. His tarsals were really oiled up and he was very smelly. Seems a bit early for that area. But hey, it is Florida, and the deer tend to do what they want! Where about you located? I live on the south side of Croom

Hey dr, that one buck with the MZ laying across him has interesting color on the shoulder. Is it scarring from the rut activity you mentioned, or actually some white hair patches?

Still LOTS of activity in south Alachua county. Hint (for Grove Park), if there are two sets of trucks 1 mile apart. They are moving thru at about the 1/2 mile mark 🤣
Also, I have oaks on my property that are dropping VERY late this year. Might be something to look for.

Got back from the w/e hunt in C5/D2 Does still have their fawns w them Bucks still chillin. Bucks and bucks, bucks and does etc hanging out and feeding together
But I will say the bucks aren’t frequenting quite as much as 10 days ago. I suspect they’re prolly out making the circuit

Last night, 7 does and then 3 bucks. The bucks were still hanging w each other eating and grazing Looks like maybe a late Dec breed.?
I woulda thought they wouldn’t have still been in a group though.

I killed a 3-year-old doe last Monday in Brooksville. She had not been bred but had a follicle on her ovary that I guessed would be ready to ovulate in the next 7-10 days.

Having multiple rut phases is inescapable on public land because they'd either have to kill a pile of does or restrict buck harvest severely. In all reality, it's a problem in most of FL since the fawn recruitment rate is so low. An even buck to doe ratio would collapse our population. I don’t think it would collapse the population. I think a balanced ratio would fix Florida’s fawn recruitment problem. Why do does come into heat all at once? So that they drop their fawns within a couple week period in the spring to overwhelm fawn predators at fawns’ most vulnerable time. When the buck to doe ratio is out of wack, nature’s scheme to protect fawns is frustrated and the fawns are dripped out a few at the time, allowing predators to overwhelm them piecemeal. The cure is the cause.

scrapes will show as soon a bucks shed their velvet. Not a sign of rut starting. Rut in Leaon and Jefferson starts now. Better be in the woods 4 days either side of Dec. 3rd.

When the buck to doe ratio is out of wack, nature’s scheme to protect fawns is frustrated and the fawns are dripped out a few at the time, allowing predators to overwhelm them piecemeal. The cure is the cause. I don't necessarily disagree, and perhaps I misspoke a bit. A balanced ratio alone wouldn't collapse the population. Shooting does to achieve that goal would collapse the population. The other option, as I mentioned, would be to severely restrict buck harvest. Recent studies show it taking 5 does to produce one legal buck in FL...and I believe this was from the panhandle. Peninsular FL was worse. Perhaps a tighter ratio would help lower that number (raise the ratio), but it highlights the extreme difficulty in equalizing the ratio in a hunted population with poor nutrition and extreme weather. This is the intent behind the statewide APRs - to tighten up the breeding period so more fawns could survive.

[br Yes , bucks and doe’s will use scrapes throughout the year. Bucks will also use them much more frequently coming into the rut. Good luck on your rut hunt!

It's on in Eastern Leon and Western Jefferson I live in NE Leon and it was really going good around Thanksgiving and into last week, but it is kinda dead now. Went out a couple times this week and only saw a couple spikes messing with the ladies. I expect it to pickup again near Christmas.
